The first two volumes are dedicated to the history of Detroit, a city which played such an important role in the devlopment of the Great Lakes region and the Middle West. Clarence Monroe Burton (1853-1932) was the historian for the city for a number of years and also founded the Burton HIstorical Collection with its stong emphasis on Detroit. The third volume is comprised of biographies of prominent Detroiters. Originally published as a five volume set, volumes IV and V are lacking in this set--both of those volumes were also devoted to biographies. Bound in the original green cloth publisher's covers with gilt spine lettering. There is rubbing to the spines and volume three has two horizontal creases to the spine as well. This is a clean, tight set with no internal or external markings. 3 volumes (of 5) ; B&W Illustrations, Plates, Maps, Plans; 4to 11" - 13" tall.
