These alterations ranged from simple misprints to deliberate changes made with the aim of correcting the text in the printer's opinion. Such practices… were commonplace in the printing industry of the era, not limited to dramatic works but also found in dictionaries, religious texts, and other forms of literature. The study traces the origins of these alterations to the way books were commonly produced in England during the reigns of Elizabeth and James I. As a result of the haphazard production methods of the time, authors often had little to no control over the final printed versions of their works. The author draws on extensive evidence from first editions and reprints to illustrate the nature and number of these alterations, arguing that they can be grouped into five categories: ordinary misprints, line-shiftings, omissions, text-changes, and small additions. The author's research sheds new light on the vexed question of textual authority in early modern English literature, challenging the long-held assumption that discrepancies between first editions and later versions were primarily due to the use of stage copies as printer's copy. The insights provided in this book will be of interest to scholars, students, and general readers interested in the history of the book, the transmission of texts, and the complexities of textual editing. Judging by the covers, these two old tomes have seen a great deal of use but their interiors are completely clean and the bindings remain strong. The corners are rubbed to the bone and both spines have been reinforced---one with clear tape which lets the gilt lettering on the leather show through; the other with maroon cloth binding tape. [Please see my four images of the actual books.] Commenced by Daniel Sanders; continued by Schmidt, finished by Cornelis Stoffel. From the Epilogue by Stoffel: "I constantly kept in mind the memorable words which Immanuelle Schmidt once spoke to me: 'Never forget that in the German-English part of Muret-Sanders we have to furnish two vast linguistic communities with a serviceable means of intercommunication that shall meet all reasonable requirements and shall prove a trustworthy source of information also to those who come after us.' . . .
