John Brown was born in Ireland about 1728, and came to America about 1732 with hIs sister, Janet and her husband, Archibald Stuart, and sett…led in Augusta County, Virginia. After being ordained into the Presbyterian ministry, he returned to Virgina where he was offered the pastorship of New Providence and Timber Ridge, two churches which had merged in 1753. He married Margaret Preston and they moved to Kentucky and raised six children. He died in 1803. The article follows the lives and careers of the six children, one of whom, John Brown, Jr., became a prominent statesman, and was thought by some to be complicit in the so-called Spanish Conspiracy.
