Prima edizione
Condizione: Very good. First Edition. First edition, n. d. (ca 1923); 6 3/4 x 4 1/2; pp. 3-22; stapled, lithographed wraps; illustrated with numerous drawings; a light crease and a small nick to fore-edge of front wrap; thin, closed splits to tips of spine; overall in very good condition-.Published as an advertisement for Dr. Caldwell's Syrup Pepsin - the Family Laxative (invented by Dr. William Burr Caldwell around 1885), the booklet featured a treasure trove of helpful advice and admonitions for a healthy living in the early 20th century. Some of the topics included "Watch the Thermometer," "Count the Calories," "Balancing Work, Play, and Sleep," etc. It also featured an extensive exercise chart, a weight chart, and a balanced ration chart. A striking, eye-catching detail of the booklet was the illustration on the front wrap, displaying in profile a running, entirely-naked man, with only a messenger bag partially covering his mid-section.

This book presents a detailed analysis of the life of Benjamin Piatt Runkle, a founder of the Sigma Chi fraternity and Civil War general, and his impact on the fraternity and wider society. The author, a historian and former editor of the Sigma Chi Quarterly, draws on original sources, including letters, speeches, and military records, to provide a vivid account of Runkle's life and the historical context in which he lived. The book explores Runkle's role in the founding of Sigma Chi, his service in the Civil War, his work as a journalist and educator, and his later years as a Grand Consul of the fraternity. Through the lens of Runkle's life, the book offers insights into the history of fraternalism, the Civil War era, and the development of American higher education. It is a valuable resource for scholars, fraternity members, and anyone interested in the history of the United States.
