Peter John Stokes was the restoration architect most closely associated with Niagara-on-the-Lake's built heritage — the guiding professional behind a significant number of the local restorations that have made the town one of the most extensively preserved historic communities in North America. His authorship of this book therefore carries a particular authority: he is describing buildings he had studied and in many cases restored firsthand. The book is organized as a practical guide in three tours, designed for the visitor as much as the armchair traveller, with Stokes selecting 58 properties and providing detailed historical commentary alongside each of Montgomery's sketches.
