Illustrated with a section of black-and-white photographic plates, black-and-white drawings, and a black-and-white portrait plate frontispiece. Some scattered previously dog-eared pages, and a few scattered underlinings and margin word or words. The upper edge of some of the photographic plates have a paper clip indent. The blank first free front endpaper has a vintage neatly scripted former owner signature. All pages are in otherwise fine condition and the spine/binding is exceedingly tight and square (see photographs). "Hopkins' note-books and papers were first edited by Humphry House in 1937, in one volume which contained his Journal and selections from diaries, undergraduate essays, sermons, and other spiritual writings. That book has long been out of print; and the recovery of Hopkins MSS has gone on. In 1947 three more of his Journal notebooks were discovered by Fr. D.A. Bischoff, SJ, at the Jesuit Provinciate in Farm Street. In 1952, Lionel Hopkins, Gerard's last remaining brother, died, aged 97; and House was invited to search The Garth, Haslemere (the Hopkins family home for over fifty years) for further MSS. Here he found and catalogued over seventy new letters, retreat notes, sketches, and music; and, with them, a mass of other long-accumulated family material: letters, photographs, scrap-books, papers of all kinds. All this was clearly of considerable value in filling out the little-known details of Hopkins's early years, and an essential background to a new edition of the note-books. This volume presents 706 letters (250 of them unpublished) for the years 1840 and 1841, which saw the publication of The Old Curiosity Shop and Barnaby Rudge within the framework of Master Humphrey's Clock. The letters mark the progress of his work, and the manuscripts of the two novels have been drawn on to clarify his many references to them. Before the volume ends Dickens had been recognized by many as a master of pathos, had been lionised in Edinburgh, and could dictate terms to his publishers. His circle of close friends had widened to include Macready, Macuse, Landor and Lord Jeffrey. The Volume ends on the eve of his departure for America. Thanks to his later holocausts oniy a few scattered letters to Dickens himself have survived-except for the year 1841. But 125 letters of that year he deposited with his solicitor on leaving England, and then forgot. This volume draws extensively on these letters in its notes. The impact he made on his friends is revealed, and simultaneously they emerge as people in their own right. Vol. 3: DJ spine edges have wear, with tears to the upper ends. DJ has chipping to the outer corners and to the top spine end. Vol. 4: written owner's name and the date.
