Full tooled leather, with gilt cover and spine lettering and decoration; five raised bands on spine; all edges gilt. Ivory, moire-pattern endpapers; reinforced hinges. Spine reads: "Holy Bible and Biblical Library--Stowe." Heavy volume about 3" thick.…Preface dated 1870. With many tissue-guarded full-page steel plate engravings, most by Dore, and over 200 smaller wood engravings within text. Two ribbon markers are present but unraveled at ends. Cover imprinted with prior owner name Mr. & Mrs. Isaac Davis. Single sepia-tone photograph of a couple inserted into "Family Portraits" album in rear could be of Mr. and Mrs. Davis. Davis (1799-1883) was mayor of Worcester, Massachusetts for 3 years, served 11 years in the Massachusetts Senate, and also served on many boards, most notably the Board of Trustees of Worcester Academy. Heavy rubbing to cover extremities, with corner tips worn through to boards and heavy scuffing to head of spine. Portions of raised sections of covers are moderately scuffed. Except for occasional very light foxing to text margins, interior is clean, tight, and unworn. Gustave Dore (illustratore).

All told, the volumes are clean and well kept. From the home of a well regarded historian of Black studies. Also was a tobacco smoker, and that combined with age has led to occasional tonin…g / darkening of the tan cloth part of these hardcover volumes - though without any consistency, it is present to some degree on nearly all. Faint odor as well, especially for those of sensitive nose, though to this seller it is not egregious. Besides that, the condition is pretty solid on all. Binding are all quite strong, sturdy, tight , square. No markings were found in any of the books, and no other damage to interiors at all. One volume has some fraying to the edge of the cloth of the front, and some of the volumes have lesser or greater degrees of rubbing, scuffing, dustsoiling, but all told clean beyond the toning.
