Pierre Jules Theophile Gautier (1811-1872) was a French poet, dramatist, novelist, journalist, and art & literary critic. He was also a great lover of animals, particularly cats, and owned many during his life. This is a book containing memories and stories about his varied pets. Originally published in France as 'Menagerie Intime'. The illustrator and translator was Mrs William Chance - Lady Julia Chance, nee Strachey, a British artist and ardent supporter of women's suffrage. The introduction is by her father, Henry Strachey, also an artist.
