Die Produktion von Tropen setzte in der Karolingerzeit ein. Sie markiert den Ubergang von einer passiven zu einer produktiven Aneignung des (von den Karolingern 'gregorianisch' genannten) Romischen Gesangs im Frankenreich. Die im Band II 1 erstmals herausgegebenen Tropen sind in zehn Handschriften franzosischer Herkunft des 12. bis 15. Jahrhunderts mit Notation auf Linien uberliefert.
