This is a reprint of A Theatrical Trip For A Wager! which is the autobiographical narrative of Captain Horton Rhys, also known by his stage name, Morton Price. Rhys's narrative was first published in 1861. Rhys writes a colorful, expressive account of his travels from England to Canada and the United States where he performed on stage with the help of an actress, Lucille, in order to win a bet in which he wagered 500 pounds. Rhys was an English military officer, playwright, and actor. One night, while dining at a group table in a hotel in Covent Garden in London, he got into a disagreement with two men by the names of A. Smith and B. Brown. Smith and Brown deride Rhys and are adamantly skeptical of his acting ability. They bet he cannot earn 500 pounds over his expenses while acting on tour in another country outside of Britain and Ireland. Rhys emphatically believes otherwise and wagers that he can. Printed in his account are the terms of the signed wager, and the rest of the narrative chronicles Rhys's eventful travels from London to North America and his experiences there. Full title reads, "A Theatrical Trip For A Wager!: Through Canada and the United States, By Captain Horton Rhys, Otherwise Known As 'Morton Price'; Comprising A Narrative of the Unique Adventures of an English Officer and Amateur Thespian in uncivilized lands; including his Travels, Tribulations, and several Encounters, as originally published in 1861.
