Aggiungi al carrelloCondizione: Very Good. Here is "James Joyce's Ulysses" by Stuart Gilbert 1934 Third printing, issued in hardcover format by Alfred A. Knopf in their Alblabooks series. One of the Earliest Critical Studies of "Ulysses" Stuart Gilbert, a long-time friend of James Joyce, contributed a chapter of an early work-in-progress by Joyce, which was later to evolve into "Finnegans Wake". (They were introduced by Sylvia Beach, proprietor of "Shakespeare and Company bookshop). Gilbert was one of the first literary critics to address the works of Joyce. Gilbert's literary analysis of "Ulysses" is quite granular, covering most of the intricacies of the book, if not page by page, then at least chapter by chapter. He identifies correspondences between Joyce's book and ancient Greek characters from Homer's original "Odyssey", as well as identifying locales within the city of Dublin, that appear in the book (and their ancient antecedents in the "Odyssey. It is a very detailed work, and in my opinion, probably one of the most important of works of literary criticism about "Ulysses" existing. One key element of this specific copy is that it came from the personal collection of poet Bruce Berlind, and has his inked signature on the front free end-paper. SERIES : Alblabooks TITLE : James Joyce's Ulysses AUTHOR : Stuart Gilbert (1883 - 1969) IMPRINT : Alfred A. Knopf PLACE : New York DATE : March 1934 EDITION : Third Printing STATUS : Out of Print -- No longer listed by the Publisher PROVENANCE : From the library of poet Bruce Berlind, with his signature in ink on the front free end-paper. DETAILS : Trade hardcover; approximately 5 3/8" x 8", red cloth covered boards and spine, with art deco style decorative embellishments on both front and spine - rear board is plain; top text-block edges are dyed black; contains a Preface, a chart with corresponding page numbers (Random House vs Shakespeare & Company edition); numerous footnotes (some of them bibliographical and some being sources), an Index. xii + 379 pages, + xix pages of index. No dust-jacket. CONDITION -- This is a previously owned book that remains clean and presentable, with the following particulars noted: EXTERIOR - Spine extremities are compressed, and the bottom extremity displays the beginning of fraying. The surface of the spine is a bit darkened and displays one small spot about 2 1/2 inches from the bottom; the boards display surface rub, the rear cover being somewhat more weathered. The front cover displays nicely. The top edge of the text-block is considerably rubbed and faded; fore- and bottom- text-block edges are toned, but clean and unmarked. BINDING - The book has been read, but with care - the leaves open easily, but the whole is solid. INTERIOR - End-papers are toned, especially on the paper over the hinges, which are considerably darker. The signature of the original owner, Bruce Berlind, esteemed poet and college professor, is written in ink at the top of the front free end-paper. I spotted a couple of pencil erasures (not egregious - (and now, when looking for them I couldn't find them). There are a few tiny spots, which might have come through the production, else the interior is clean and free of marking. No underlining, no marginalia. DUST-JACKET - Not present.…
