( these are about one sixteenth of an inch long) Family history undertaken by Josiah Sturtevant's great grandson which is rich in illuminating historical detail, photographs, documents, letters and other visual memorabilia. Signed with a lengthy inscription on the title page. He served in the 17th regiment of Maine and as a Lieutenant in the U.S. 80th Regiment, Colored Infantry. An interesting historical tidbit from the book is from the commander of the Southern Department, General David Hunter; "No regiment of 'fugitive slaves' has been or is being organized in this department. There is, however, a fine regiment of persons whose late masters are fugitive rebels.". ( Hunter's reply to Congressional concerns over black enlistments).
