It is part of a wider research program to provide a basis for exploiting the potential of high-performance concrete (HPC) and was undertaken because of the potential benefits of HPC to the US construction industry. The microstructure of mortars with water/solids ratios (w/s) of 0.26 and 0.29, cured under water at 7, 23, and 40°C, were studied by scanning electron microscopy and X -ray powder diffractometry. The degree of hydration and extent of pozzolanic reaction was estimated after quantifying the residual unhydrated cement by image analysis and the mass percent calcium hydroxide by X-ray powder diffraction. Their microstructures were fairly homogeneous in both the bulk paste and at the paste -aggregate transition zone. In all mortars, the outer 250 µm was hydrated to about 85 percent and showed microcracks. The degree of hydration then decreased rapidly beyond the outer zone to about 69 percent and less microcracking was observed. The author found a temperature effect on the reactivity of silica fume that will aid construction workers in temperature-controlled environments. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

The author meticulously analyzes two samples of CCRL prociency cement using advanced techniques like electron microscopy and computer modeling. Through these analyses, the book sheds light on the hydration kinetics, heat of hydration, and strength development of these cements. By comparing the findings with experimental data, the book evaluates the accuracy of the Virtual Cement and Concrete Testing Laboratory (VCCTL) in predicting the properties of different cements. This in-depth examination not only enhances our understanding of Portland cement but also highlights the potential of VCCTL as a valuable tool in optimizing cement production and construction practices. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. Within six months after installation, in early 2010, both decks exhibited considerable transverse cracking, with some cracks extending through the thickness of the deck. Similar cracking was observed in the Snake River bridge deck in Wyoming. This report details the results of a two-pronged approach to examining the causes of such cracking.
