Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. 2019 Brill hardcover edition. Light reading wear else very good condition. From the cover: In Great Immortality, twenty scholars from considerably different cultural backgrounds explore the ways in which certain poets, writers, and artists in Europe have become major figures of cultural memory. Through individual case studies, many of the contributors expand and challenge the concepts of cultural sainthood and canonization as developed by Marijan Dovic and Jon Karl Helgason in National Poets, Cultural Saints: Canonization and Commemorative Cults of Writers in Europe (Brill, 2017). Even though the major focus of the book is the nineteenth-century cults of national poets, the volume examines a wide variety of cases in a very broad temporal and geographical framework - from Dante and Petrarch to the most recent attempts to sanctify artists by both the Catholic and Orthodox churches, and from the rise of a medieval Icelandic author of sagas to the veneration of a poet and national leader in Georgia. Contents: Notes on Contributors From a Monument in Ljubljana to the History and Theory of Cultural Saints: a Preface by Marko Juvan and Sveinn Yngvi Egilsson Cultural Sainthood and Great Immortality: an Introduction by Marijan Dovic and Jon Karl Helgason 1. Hardback. Condizione: New. Nineteenth-century national movements perceived the nation as a community defined by language, culture and history. Part of the infrastructure to spread this view of the nation were institutions publishing literary and scientific texts in the national language. Starting with the Matica srpska (Pest, 1826), a particular kind of society was established in several parts of the Habsburg Empire inspiring each other, but with often major differences in activities, membership and financing. Outside of the Slavic world analogues institutions played a similar key role in the early stages of national revival in Europe. The Matica and Beyond is the first concerted attempt to comparatively investigate both the specificity and commonality of these cultural associations, bringing together cases from differing regional, political and social circumstances.Contributors are: Daniel Baric, Benjamin Bossaert, Marijan Dovi, Liljana Gushevska, Jörg Hackmann, Roisn Higgins, Alfonso Iglesias Amorn, Dagmar Kroanov, Joep Leerssen, Marion Löffler, Philippe Martel, Alexei Miller, Xos M. Nez Seixas, Iryna Orlevych, Magdalna Pokorn, Milo eznk, Jan Rock, Diliara M. Usmanova, and Zsuzsanna Varga.…
