Aggiungi al carrello1st Edition. 4 [of an eventual 6] vols: 191; 183; 105; 123 pp including Index. Text is in French. Profusely illustrated with photographic images in b/w and color on tipped plates. 12-3/4" x 9-3/4" Esmerian was a French-Armenian gem dealer and, more famously in book circles, one of the 20th century's great collectors of fine bookbindings. Esmerian assembled what is generally regarded as one of the finest private collections of decorated bindings and illuminated manuscripts ever formed. Its strength was French: fifteenth- and sixteenth-century books, armorial and mosaic bindings associated with François I, Henri II, Catherine de Médicis, Diane de Poitiers, Charles IX and Henri III, then eighteenth-century illustrated books (often unique copies with original drawings by artists such as David and Debucourt), nineteenth-century illustrated books, and modern livres de peintres by Braque, Bonnard, Picasso and Matisse. He was also a serious scholar of binding history rather than a passive buyer - he lent 119 bindings to Dorothy Miner's landmark 1957 Baltimore exhibition The History of Bookbinding 525-1950 A.D., more than the Morgan Library and the New York Public Library combined, and he produced technical work on seventeenth-century binding structures. Esmerian's library was dispersed in Paris between 1972 and 1974 in 6 parts (five volumes plus a supplement to part two, the Douze tableaux synoptiques sur la reliure au XVIIe siècle), catalogued by Georges Blaizot and Claude Guérin. The catalogues are themselves collectors' items and remain standard reference works; "Esmerian" as a provenance line still carries weight in binding descriptions today. His papers are held at the Grolier Club in New York. Research assistance by Claude. Cloth dull. Laid in newspaper clippings (also in French). A VG set. Turquoise cloth binding with gilt title lettering stamped to front boards and initials stamped to spines.…
