Integrated pest management, therefore becomes a compulsory strategy in agriculture, which offers a toolbox of complementary crop and region specific crop protection solutions to address these rising pressures. IPM aims at more sustainable solutions by using complementary technologies and one of them is the use of bio-pesticides including genetically modified cropping systems. The aim is to reduce pests below economic thresholds utilizing key ecological services particularly bio-control systems via semi chemicals bio-pesticides precision pest monitoring tools, and rapid diagnostics. In fact we are facing twin problems of environment and food security for the expanding population and it is necessary to ensure adequate pesticide free food. The eco-friendly nature of bio-pesticide products suggests environment safety and safety for natural enemies and non target organisms. However their adoption and use have lagged behind due to certain quality standards and interest by big industrial houses and cumbersome regulatory procedures. The present book is an attempt to critically debate over all these issues and suggest a road map for future.

The careful balance of mass production and use of sustainable practices need to be better understood and promoted to feed the ever expanding population. Biopesticides have made some impact during last few decades but there is still a lot that can be done to promote the adoption of the environmentally friendly and yield enhancing crop inputs. Main strategies should involve biopesticides with low/no residue brand, supportive legislation as an incentive to research and development, promote the benefits of biopesticide use, draw the correlation between sustainability and biopesticides. The endeavour in this book has been in this direction, specifically to correlate the biopesticide concept in sustainable agriculture based on various economically important crops. This book emphasizes the role of various biopesticides in the protection of various crops like rice, maize, pulses, oilseeds, cotton, sugarcane, vegetables, fruits, tobacco, spice crops, tuber crops, coconut, tea, forest plantations and stored products. There has definitely been progress but several constraints like variable performance under field conditions, maintenance of quality standards, regulatory procedures and less interest by big industrial houses need to be addressed. The present book is an attempt to evaluate the scope of biopesticides in sustainable agriculture of various crops in order to contemplate the progress and constraints and suggest a future roadmap for potential use of biopesticides.
