Rather than focusing on the role that certain films, or the cinema as an institution, might play in political consciousness, the book asks a different question: how can the subject of politics in film be thought? This problem is presented in a systematic-theoretical rather than historical manner. The main aim of this book is a retrospective rehabilitation of the psychoanalytical concept of suture, whose political core is progressively revealed. In a second step, this rereading of suture-theory is mediated with the Marxist aesthetics of Fredric Jameson. From the perspective of this reconfigured aesthetics of negativity, films by Hitchcock, Antonioni, Haneke and Kubrick are analyzed as articulations of a political unconscious. This book is a contribution to an aesthetics of cinema rooted in Marxist theory. Rather than focusing on the role that certain films, or the cinema as an institution, might play in political consciousness, the book asks a different question: how can the subject of politics in film be thought? Kann es bei einem erklärten Vertreter einer »traurigen Wissenschaft« [Minima Moralia] überhaupt etwas zu lachen geben Ziel der vorliegenden Studie ist nichts anderes, als für Adornos Gelächter eine theoretische Lanze zu brechen und diesem nicht nur in seinen Texten nachzuspüren, sondern auch in den Filmen jener Komiker, die er so bewunderte: von Charlie Chaplin und den Marx Brothers. Aus der parallelen Lektüre von philosophischen Texten und Hollywood-Filmen wird nicht zuletzt eine Filmästhetik extrahiert, von der immer noch von manchen angenommen wird, dass es diese bei einem Denker nicht geben könne, der ja berechtigterweise einmal behauptete, nach jedem Kinobesuch wieder dümmer herauszukommen. Dialektik mit und nach Adorno heißt aber auch, das Kluge aus dem Dummen zu extrahieren und aus dem Niedrigen das Hohe. Adorno nahm die Komik so ernst, dass er ihr einst sogar ein philosophisches Seminar in Frankfurt widmete. In den unveröffentlichten Aufzeichnungen zu diesem sogenannten Lach-Seminar findet sich folgender Beitrag: »Horkheimer, der seinem Hund das Bellen beibrachte.« In dieser Notiz verdichtet sich Adornos komische Theorie in einem Satz: So wie der aggressive Laut des Hundes mehr Schein ist als naturhaftes Sein, so verdankt sich auch der Slapstick in seinem ursprünglichen Wortsinn einer Praxis der italienischen Commedia dell'arte, bei der sich die Clowns mit gedoppelten Holzflächen lautstark auf den Kopf schlugen, aber das eben nur vorgetäuscht. Destruktion und Spiel, Reales und Imaginäres, Sichtbares und Hörbares, Schmerz und Scherz verbinden sich so in Adornos Slapstick, der kein Schlagstock ist.
