Pat Summitt (19522016) was the head coach of the University of Tennessee Lady Volunteers women's basketball team from 1974 to 2012. She achieved a record of 1,098208, becoming the first NCAA basketball coachmen's or women'sto reach 1,000 career wins, and led Tennessee to eight national championships (1987, 1989, 1991, 19961998, 2007, 2008). She also served as head coach of the U.S. women's national team, winning a gold medal at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. Diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's disease in 2011, she continued coaching one final season before retiring, later establishing the Pat Summitt Foundation to support research and care for the disease.
