For a great part of the Christian tradition, marriage has been dismissed or regarded as inferior in favour of celibacy. It is possible, however, to have a thoroughly positive understanding of marriage alongside celibacy.I will examine this question by looking at two key examples in the Christian tradition, Gregory of Nyssa's On Virginity and St. Augustine of Hippo's The excellence of Marriage. For Nyssa, celibacy seems to be the ideal. I will show that his treatment is more complex than this; it is clear, however, that he does not regard marriage as in the sense of having a positive theology of it. Augustine, on the opposite, advocates for an understanding of marriage as a good way of Christian life, but still insists on its inferiority to celibacy. I will show, however, he opens a way that allows a development of theological interpretation of marriage as a sacrament of love. I will argue that as a sacrament of love, marriage does not have to be sacrificed in favour of celibacy but neither should it be regarded as an inferior good compared to celibacy.The predominantly negative view of marriage in both authors is influenced by their (partly unconscious) engagement in the Mystic and/or Gnostic traditions. I will argue that both authors neglect the crucial aspect of love in marriage which stems from the reluctance to regard the spiritual and bodily dimensions of love as inseparable. This is caused by the negative view of the embodied world and sexuality, which leads to an impoverished notion and a diminished role of love that is not appropriate with regard to man's embodied nature and destroys the possibility of understanding marriage as an active, positive participation in God's love.

The focus will be on 'Madame Bovary'. At first sight, the ironic character of 'Madame Bovary' appears to be susceptible to Wallace's criticism of irony. I will show that, despite his use of irony, Flaubert is ultimately as committed to recognizing a transcendent reality through his writing.Gustave Flaubert's 'Madame Bovary' and David Foster Wallace's 'Brief Interviews with Hideous Men' were written nearly 150 years apart. Flaubert, on the one hand, is often categorized within the tradition of realism - a label that he himself rejected - which followed a literary period of romanticism. On the other hand, Wallace, as a contemporary writer, enters a stage that is dominated by postmodern thinking. Both their writings are shaped by their critical engagement with the literary movement and social reality of their time and the protagonists of their writings are created as prototypes of the mind-set they seek to criticize through literary reflection. Due to the differences in their literary context, however, it seems natural to assume that the two writers have very different literary agendas. Flaubert appears to propose through his writings a radical dissociation in face of and opposition to both the escapist tendencies of romantic novels and the reality of bourgeois society of his time, whereas Wallace criticizes the exact tendency of ironic dissociation as they have become rife in post-modern literature.

The stories examine the world of thought and action of two characters feeling trapped within certain limits and trying to break through them, while in their failures other limitations manifest themselves. These different levels add to a total picture reflecting the limits of a consciousness that seeks to overcome its own finitude - manifested in the embodiedness of the self and the factual resistance of the world - through the assertion of the self, but ends up trapped within itself. The stories eventually culminate in the realization that only the opening towards a genuine other can lead out of the entrapment within the self and factuality, and open up a dimension in which the embodied world and every single consciousness is given meaning and value.I will show that the inner conflict of the two characters is essentially the same, despite the different personal convictions of the authors - Dostoyevsky as a conflicted Christian, Shelley in her critical opposition to religion - and that because of this difference, a resolution of the conflict is possible only in one case. Both authors place their figures in an ultimately profane world from which the latter have alienated themselves to the core of their existence and essence. The opening of the self towards an other is crucial for reconciliation - interhuman relation, however, is also met with limitations within the embodied world. The (im)possibility of overcoming these, at last, is not only conveyed through the content of the stories but concretely realized in the distinctive form of their narrative.

This relation has been interpreted very differently with regard to questions such as: Is there a conceptual primacy of one over the other or should they be regarded as equally standing next to each other How is the prevalence of the two forces to be balanced And most importantly - given the indisputable differences between the two, how can they be mediated in the encounter between the Divine and the human On one side of the extreme, a fundamental separation between them is postulated, with Agape attributed to God only and Eros relegated to the human sphere. Such a separation was popularized by the Swedish theologian Anders Nygren. He strongly rejects the Neo-Platonic influence on Christianity which puts at its centre the human striving towards the Divine through Eros in hopes of designing a purified, superior Christian doctrine.Texts by Richard of St. Victor and Catherine of Siena who stand within the Neoplatonic and Mystic traditions of Christianity argue that it is the balanced incorporation of the idea of Eros (as opposed to its full rejection) which enables an understanding of a reciprocal loving relationship by making room for human activity in building it. This understanding is shown to be reasonable within the context of modern theology by laying the foundations for a conceptual re-interpretation of the doctrine of creation and incarnation which enables a fundamental realignment of the relation between Eros and Agape.

Besonders durch das Licht, das die modernen Neurowissenschaften auf sie wirft, wird sie in das Zentrum zeitgenössischer Diskurse gerückt. Der Kern der Kontroverse liegt in der Frage, in welchem Verhältnis Freiheit und Determinismus bzw. Notwendigkeit zueinander stehen. Zwei zentrale Positionen - der Inkompatibilismus, der die beiden für unvereinbar sieht, und der Kompatibilismus, der die gegenteilige Auffassung vertritt - sind, zum Teil in Vorläuferformen, schon seit Jahrhunderten von verschiedenen Philosophen vertreten worden. Als einer der bedeutendsten Vertreter des klassischen Kompatibilismus gilt der britische Empirist David Hume. Die folgende Arbeit analysiert Humes Argumentation für die Existenz der Freiheit anhand des ersten Abschnitts des achten Kapitels aus seinem Werk 'Eine Untersuchung über den menschlichen Verstand' aus dem Jahre 1748.

Jahrhunderts, Note: 1,0, Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg (Philosophische Fakultät), Veranstaltung: Hauptseminar: Das Problem der Willensfreiheit, Sprache: Deuts…ch, Abstract: Eine lange Zeit dominierende Überzeugung innerhalb der Debatte über Willensfreiheit und moralischer Verantwortlichkeit des Menschen ist im Principle of Alternate Possibilities (PAP) formuliert: Wenn ein Akteur moralisch verantwortlich für eine Entscheidung ist, dann hätte er anders entscheiden können müssen. Hinter diesem Prinzip steht eine bestimmte Vorstellung der Kontrolle über eigene Entscheidungen, die von vielen als ein grundlegendes Kriterium für die Freiheit eines Akteurs in Bezug auf die Entscheidungsfindung angesehen wird: Er muss die Möglichkeit gehabt haben, sich auch für eine alternative Handlung zu entscheiden. Nimmt man einen kausalen Determinismus an, der den Weltverlauf durch vergangene Weltzustände und Naturgesetze bestimmt, begründet das PAP die Position des Inkompatibilismus.Um das PAP zu widerlegen, entwarf Harry Frankfurt in 'Alternate Possibilities and Moral Responsibility' (1969) ein Gedankenexperiment, das in seiner allgemeinen Struktur als Frankfurt-style case (FSC) bezeichnet wird. Eine bekannte weiterentwickelte Version des Gedankenexperiments stammt von John Martin Fischer, z.B. in 'Frankfurt-type Examples and Semicompatibilism: New Work' (2011). Ein FSC zeichnet sich durch die entscheidende Rolle eines counterfactual interveners aus. Dieser gewährleistet, dass der Akteur, um dessen Willensentscheidung es geht, keine Möglichkeit hat, sich anders zu entscheiden, ohne jedoch Einfluss auf die Entscheidungsbildung an sich zu nehmen. Da sich durch diese Eigenschaften der counterfactual intervention die Intuition einstellt, dass der Akteur moralische Verantwortung für seine Entscheidung/Handlung tragen könnte, scheint der FSC ein ernstzunehmender Angriff gegen das PAP zu sein. Viele Vertreter des PAP geben sich jedoch nicht geschlagen und haben verschiedene Kritikpunkte gegen die Aussagekraft des FSC vorgebracht. Eine der hartnäckigsten Herausforderungen für den FSC ist die sogenannte Dilemma Defense (erstmals 1985 von Robert Kane formuliert).Diese Arbeit ist eine zusammenhängende Rekonstruktion und kritische Reflexion eines Diskussionsstrangs innerhalb der darauf entbrannten Debatte, der auf der einen Seite von Fischer als Verteidiger des FSC geführt wird. Leitgedanke ist die strittige Frage, wie entscheidend die Rolle des counterfactual interveners in FSCs wirklich sein kann.
