Des étincelles électriques sont générées entre deux él…ectrodes lorsque celles-ci sont maintenues à une faible distance l'une de l'autre dans un milieu diélectrique et qu'une différence de potentiel élevée est appliquée entre elles. Des zones localisées de températures élevées sont formées en raison des étincelles qui se produisent entre les surfaces des deux électrodes. Le matériau de la pièce dans cette zone localisée fond et se vaporise. La majeure partie du matériau fondu et vaporisé est évacuée de l'espace inter-électrodes par le flux diélectrique sous forme de particules de débris. Pour éviter un échauffement excessif, l'énergie électrique est fournie sous forme d'impulsions brèves. L'étincelle se produit lorsque l'écart entre l'outil et la surface de la pièce est le plus faible. Après l'enlèvement de matière par une étincelle, cet espace augmente et l'emplacement de l'étincelle suivante se déplace vers un autre point de la surface de la pièce. De cette manière, plusieurs étincelles se produisent à différents endroits sur toute la surface de la pièce, correspondant à l'écart entre l'outil et la pièce.
