Black, attorney for the Sutro Tunnel Comany; a report by Adolph Sutro on "The Mineral Resources of the United States and the Importance and Necessity of Inaugurating a Rational System of Mining"; a "memorial" from the Nevada Legislature asking the United States to aid in the construction of the Sutro Tunnel, and additional documents related to controversies arising from the Sutro Tunnel Act of 1866. The Act granted Sutro the right of way he needed to construct his proposed drainage tunnel, which he argued would alleviate the flooding of the mines under Virginia City, saving pumping costs, allowing for deeper mining, and providing better ventilation and an additional means of escape for miners. The Act also granted him lucrative mining rights along the length of the tunnel and was perceived as a threat by other mining interests.…

No Binding. Condizione: Very Good. Collection of fourteen original materials relating to Adolph Sutro. Adolph Sutro (1830-1898) is perhaps best-known for being the twenty-fourth mayor of San Francisco from 1895-1897, but he was also a mining engineer, entrepreneur, and philanthropist who made a fortune at the Comstock Lode in Virginia City, Nevada. All items in this collection are paper materials. 1865-1912. Some materials are undated. Materials range in size between about 3 3/8" x 7 3/4" and 11" x 17." Each document is one page, complete, and printed on one side of the paper. Materials are all very clean and intact overall. Most have only horizontal and vertical fold lines, which may be original, and slight edge wear. There is only one document with fairly significant damage which is a notarized certificate dated 1865. This document has the lower-left corner missing, a piece measuring about 3" x 2 1/2." The certificate is datelined November 8, 1865 in Storey County, Nevada and signed in black ink by Sutro and notary Samuel Wasserman. The certificate confirms that Sutro "executed the foregoing Instrument . freely and voluntarily." The certificate is the only document in the collection signed by Sutro. The following description pertains to the remaining materials. Blank payment receipt (No. 381) for the "Offices of Adolph Sutro" on Montgomery Block; fill-in date within the 1890s. Blank payment receipt (No. 786) on white paper; fill-in dates within the 1800s; address is 74 Montgomery Block. Alexander Watson is listed as the agent for Sutro on this receipt. Blank leaf of white stationery with "Sutro Heights, San Francisco, Cal." and a small illustration of a man using a pickaxe with the words, "Labor Omnia Vincit," printed on it. Blank real estate indenture on white paper with a fill-in date within the 1880s. Blank deed on white paper with a fill-in date within the 1800s. Two payment receipts dated 1892 for paid real estate taxes with handwriting in black ink and a stamp from Deputy Tax Collector James W. McCabe. 1894 California Academy of Sciences Reform Ticket on white paper with Sutro named as one of the trustees. A reprint of a San Francisco Examiner article from August 1894 titled, "Adolph Sutro to the People. He Appeals to Them to Rise en Masse Against the Funding Bill." In this article, Sutro writes to the Examiner's editor and advocates for public opposition to the Pacific Railroad Funding Bill which would protect the Southern Pacific Railroad. Excerpt from article: "If ever passed through the House, it is almost sure to pass a corporation Senate, and the only hope then remains in President Cleveland's veto power." Printed letter signed on white paper; datelined May 20, 1895 in San Francisco. The letter urges Sutro to appoint Samuel Foster as one of the San Francisco Board of Election Commissioners. Signed by James[?] S. Day. Printed document on white paper in which Chairman George T. Gaden talks about the California State Assembly passing the Bledsoe Resolution, which ran against the Reilly Funding Bill. A printed document dated June 1897 in which an individual, presumably Sutro, makes an address to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. In this document, Sutro adamantly calls for a proper sewer system to be installed in San Francisco. The final document is a typed letter datelined June 8, 1912 in San Francisco. This letter is about a legal dispute involving Sutro's estate after his passing. The dispute was between two of Sutro's children, Emma L. Merritt (nee Sutro; 1855-1938) and Charles W. Sutro (1864-1936), and Clara Kluge Sutro, who claimed to be Sutro's widow under common law marriage. Clara had accepted a $100,000 settlement from Emma and Charles, but this letter discusses ongoing legal matters about escrow and partial distribution of the estate. The letter is addressed to Emma and Charles from Charles W. Stacy[?], whose client is Clara. The letter is signed by Stacy[?] in black ink. Signed by Author(s).…
