La vie est dure et la mère travaille plus qu'elle ne devrait le faire, alors que le père, bijoutier, moins qu'il ne le voudrait. Or David est doué, très doué Sur les instance du rabbin, la famille s'installe à Odessa pour que David puisse suivre les Beaux-Arts. Parti à Paris, ses débuts sont prometteurs mais misérables. Mais voici qu'il fait le portrait de la fille d'un mécène qui s'éprend de lui. Marié, il trouve enfin bonheur et aisance matérielle. Mais son art ? Ce n'est pas, à proprement parler, un conte juif avertit l'auteure. «David Levinson m'a confié l'histoire ou le drame de sa vie que je n'ai pas voulu décolorer en lui donnant le caractère plus général que le sujet aurait peut-être comporté.» Poète , romancière et essayiste, auteure de plusieurs recueils de vers témoignant d'un réel talent, Suzanne Bloch-Roukhomovsky a publié, en 1927, L'Ame pensive deux ans avant cette nouvelle parue dans La petite Illustration. L'auteure participe alors au mouvement du réveil juif, «qui caractérise une partie de la judaïcité française de l'entre-deux-guerres. En effet, comme l'ont noté les historiens, le modèle israélite d'intégration des Juifs dans la société française, qui fait du judaisme seulement une religion, se trouve alors critiqué par une partie des intellectuels juifs. Le succès relatif du sionisme politique s'accompagne d'un questionnement sur l'identité juive, d'où il ressort que le judaisme comporte une dimension culturelle qu'il s'agit de revendiquer à travers plusieurs formes d'art, notamment en littérature et en peinture.» (Les livres de cuisine juive: à la recherche d'un monde perdu Valérie Assan et Sophie Nizard, 2014, cairn.info Elle écrira d'ailleurs, la même année, Gastronomie juive, illustration d'une cuisine expression de la culture juive.
