From the Preface, "The following article is an edited version of 'The Making Of The Madcap Laughs', a limited issue fanzine first published in 1982 by Malcolm Jones. Although changing it from first person to third, we've hopefully retained its original flavour as an insight to the mechanics behind the recording of what remains one of the era's most original, if fragile, talents." And from the article's opening paragraph, "In March, 1969, Syd Barrett telephoned EMI's studio booking office to ask if he could go back into the studios and start recording again. It was over a year since he had parted company with PinkFloyd, and thus the request was referred to Malcolm Jones, then the head of the company's progressive outlet, Harvest." Very scarce.

From the Introduction, "Scarcely a year goes by than the rock press, rather like the Times and the first cuckoo of spring, report a 'sighting' of Syd Barrett, usually in Cambridge or London. Whether these reports are accurate is uncertain, but every since the early seventies the myth surrounding the man seems to have mushroomed. There is a growing army of admirers who would see him as some sort of living legend, even though his total recorded output consists of little more than three albums.
