First published in 1674. Half black leather cover with dark cloth boards. Gilt title on spine 'Prayers'. Binding is splitting and coming away at the hinges. Candidate for re-backing/rebinding. The contents appear complete, clean and unmarked. Old signatures and inscriptions on the reverse of the titlepage and the last page (page 575). Few copies of this edition appear to be held in the main libraries in the UK.

Hardcover. Condizione: Fair. First edition. Full brown leather cover, with five raised bands to spine. 158 x 207 x 40mm. 588pp. Includes list of Errata on final page. Cover shows many stains, marks and minor scuffs, but nevertheless remains strong overall, with hinges still sound; the severest damage is at bottom of spine, where… a piece of leather, c. 1.5cm x 1.5cm, is almost detached; title-labels are missing from spine; no leaves before half-title page, where there is a previous owner name (J. F. Herschell); internal pages are clean, bright and unmarked (remarkably so, considering they are more than 300 years old!); binding remains strong throughout. Overall, a well-preserved first edition copy - very scarce. NB: An extra shipping charge may be requested for heavier or more valuable items. Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Written by Symon Patrick, the Bishop of Ely, this book provides a clear and thorough guide to the laws and ceremonies found in the biblical book of Leviticus. The text explains the meaning behind the ancient rules and religious duties of the time, making the complex lessons of the Old Testament…easier for readers in the late seventeenth century to understand. Very Good Condition. Brown calf binding with gilt panelling to boards. Binding is firm and contents are clean. Slight trimming to top-edge. Wonderful 17th century marble end papers and armorial plate of Vanhattem of Dinton Hall, Bucks to front pastedown. Boards have some notable shelf-wear to boards and some bumping to corners causing slight peeling to leather edges. Lettering has faded to spine. Slight loss to spine tail (1cm). A very nice copy overall.

The end papers seem to be newer paper than the book contents. Rest of the book is original. Some chipping to page edges and some marks including what look like finger prints to page edges. Some staining to top half of first few pages but text is still completely legible. Pre-owned.

'A Commentary Upon The First Book of Moses Called GENESIS' ~ by Symon, Lord Bishop of Ely (Symon Patrick D.D); pub by Richard Chilwell, St Paul's Church-Yard, London 1695; 100% text is in English, full original calf with 4 raised bands with title printed in gilt on a red leather path, sm…all 4to - 6 ½" x 7 ¾"; inside front cover has part of an old book mark - the other part has been ripped out; also a name hand written in ink; on the page opposite title page is printed 'Imprimatur: Jo. Cant. Lambethae Mall 26 1694'; following the title page is 'The Preface' for 6 pps dated 'April 10 1694'; then follow 'An Advertisement' for 1 pp followed by 'Errata' 1pp; then commences p1 of the book finishing on p650 and followed by 3pps of 'Books Written by Simon Patrick DD'; then the end paper and back cover. Both inside front & back hinges are slightly exposed, the front being slightly weaker than the back one; but both are attached with strong thread. There is some damage to top and bottom of the spine , also a small piece of leather is missing on the right side of the spine part way up - note this on the photos - and all corners are bruised; also the covers are a bit scuffed. There is browning and foxing to the first and later pps but the body of the book seems to be mainly free. I have checked for any copies of this edition that may be for sale, but don't seem to find any at all - so conclude that this book is scarce - unless proven wrong! Listed in Wing p772.
