Condizione: Very Good. 1st Edition. This is an original antique engraving print of St. George's Chapel or St. George's Church, Leicestershire, in excellent condition. It is sized 285 x 410 mm, under a mount sized 440 x 565 mm. It is a little creased which could be removed relatively easily but I haven't bothered yet, it is also…a little trimmed but the description is still at the bottom (under the mount). This is a really scarce print. I've only ever seen one of these and this is it! Why on Amazon do most sellers not describe their actual book? Leather. Condizione: Very Good. First edition. The first edition of this work detailing nineteenth century travel in South Africa. Illustrated, with six plates and a large folding map of South Africa to volume I. Eight plates to volume II. Illustrations to this work of animals are by W Harvey, 'from specimens in the Author's pos…session'. Lithographs are by T M Baynes. The view of Fort Wiltshire is by Mr Turvey. Collated, complete. Bookplate to front pastedown of both volumes, Henry Hepburn Bright. Bound by Saul Solomon and Co, Cape Town, with the label to the front pastedown. An uncommon work. This work reflects on the geography, flora, fauna, hunting and colonies in South Africa during the nineteenth century. Steedman's work also highlights several 'new and undescribed animals'. Steedman first arrived at Cape Colony in 1820 as an independent settler arriving on a settler ship. He ran a successful business in the colony which then enabled him to fund his travels in search of natural history specimens. Over the years Steedman collected over 300 animals, including many that had not been seen before. Upon his eventual return to England and prior to the publication of this work he held an exhibition of his animals. In half calf bindings with marbled paper boards. Externally, generally smart. Light rubbing to the joints and to the extremities. Heavy rubbing to the boards. Spines have faded due to rubbing. Prior owner's bookplate to the front pastedown, Henry Hepburn Bright. Binder's stamp to the front pastedown, Saul Solomon and Co, Cape Town. Prior owner's inscription to the recto of front endpaper to both volumes, dated 1926. Internally, both volumes are firmly bound. Tissue guard to plate at page 9 to volume II is loosening. Pages are generally bright. Heavy spotting to the first and last few pages, with occasional scattered spots and the odd light tidemark throughout. Very Good. W Harvey; Turvey; T M Baynes (illustratore). book.

Docks by "The Colossus of Roads" Lithograph. In the early nineteenth century the Port of London came under pressure, and new docks were needed. Parliament selected a site in the Docklands in 1825, and construction began in 1827. The new docks were designed by Thomas Telford, a prominent contemporary civil engineer known as 'The…Colossus of Roads', after overseeing several highway-building projects. It was his only major project in London, carving out two basins from the Thames accessed through a lock. The docks were made so that ships could unload directly from the water into the warehouses, reducing the quayside traffic. The new docks were named after St Katharine's Hospital, founded by Matilda of Boulogne in 1147, which was demolished along with the slums that had grown up around it to make way for the new development. The area was particularly popular with foreign craftsmen, as it was exempt from the London guild restrictions. BM 1880,1113.1688; MOL 002069. Image: 303 by 466mm (12 by 18.25 inches).
