Het leverde de minister-president een hoop kritiek op. Historici wezen erop dat het Romeinse Rijk niet door aanvallen van buiten, maar door interne problemen bezweken is. Bovendien: wil Rutte, die nota bene zelf historicus is, de vluchtelingenstroom uit Syrië, Irak en Afghanistan gelijkstellen aan de barbaren die Rome aanvielen? De premier bleek niet onder de indruk. Een maand later herhaalde hij zijn waarschuwing in een gesprek met buitenlandse journalisten ter gelegenheid van het komend EU-voorzitterschap van Nederland. De verwijzing naar de val van het Romeinse Rijk is niet nieuw. In zijn boek Mietjes, monsters en barbaren. Hoe we de klassieke oudheid gebruiken om onszelf te begrijpen laat de Vlaamse classicus Toon Van Houdt zien dat de oudheid al eeuwen gebruikt of liever misbruikt wordt om de eigen identiteit te begrijpen en de eigen daden te rechtvaardigen. Dat kan een positieve insteek hebben. (.) Maar de klassieke oudheid is ook vaak gebruikt voor minder prijzenswaardige doeleinden. Bekend is dat de Britten en Spanjaarden het Romeinse Rijk misbruikten om hun kolonialisme te rechtvaardigen. Zoals de Romeinen de wereld veroverden en beschaving brachten, zo zouden de Britten, die door de klassieke cultuur gevormd waren, de rest van de wereld cultuur bijbrengen. (.) De inzet van de klassieke oudheid is nog gênanter tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Vooral Mussolini verwees schaamteloos naar de veroveringstochten van het Romeinse Rijk.(.) De klassieke oudheid is divers en zo zijn de actoren die erin voorkomen. Kennis ervan biedt inzicht in een veelzijdige cultuur en geschiedenis, die mede aan de basis van onze eigen identiteit liggen. Maar al te gemakkelijk kan oppervlakkige kennis tot misbruik leiden, waardoor de geschiedenis te snel naar de hand wordt gezet. Mark Rutte had zich als premier én als historicus beter kunnen bedenken, toen hij wat al te snel naar de val van het Romeinse Rijk verwees.' (MARC JANSSENS in Nederlands Dagblad, 04.12.20215).

De Jezuiet Leonardus Lessius (1…554-1623) publiceerd een 'lijvig werk 'Over rechtvaardigheid en recht (De iustitia et iure), waarin tal van economische thema's aan bod kwamen. Het probleem van lening, interest en woeker is er één van. Het is een onderwerp dat ook in de economische ethiek van vandaag in de belangstelling sttat. Zo heeft de problematiek van de schuldenlast het morele debat over intrest en woeker opnieuw geopend. Bovendien heeft de reflectie over ecologie en zorg voor toekomstige genereaties ertoe geleid dat het fenomeen ' intrest' en de notie 'tijdspreferentie' die daarmee samenhangt fundamenteel ter discussie wordt gesteld.
