Het boek documenteert en analyseert de reeks getekende en grafische werken van James Ensor (1860-1949) getiteld De aureolen van Christus of de gevoeligheden van het licht, een serie tekeningen/etsen die de Christusfiguur en Bijbelse scènes interpreteert met een uitgesproken aandacht voor licht, dramatische expressie en symbolische geladenheid. Het legt uit hoe Ensor in deze werken het klassieke religieuze thema koppelt aan zijn eigen visie op licht en spreiding van licht: het licht is niet louter illustratief, maar expressief: het werkt als dramatisch instrument, als visuele 'gevoeligheid'. Het boek biedt beschouwingen over compositie, licht- en schaduwgebruik (clair-obscur), de massaal bevolkte scènes, de groteske of symbolistische elementen, en de manier waarop Ensor het traditionele Christus-thema transmuteert tot iets moderns, visionairs en psychologisch geladen. Daarnaast plaatst het de reeks in de context van Ensors artistieke ontwikkeling: zijn fascinatie voor oude meesters zoals Rembrandt van Rijn, de invloed van licht-studies bij kunstenaars als J. M. W. Turner, en Ensors evolutie van sombere interieurvoorstellingen naar flamboyante, dramatische religieuze visioenen.
