En 1906, la France connait le pire accident minier d'Europe, la catastrophe de Courrières, qui fit 1099 morts à la suite d'un coup de poussi…ère. Pour palier le manque de recherches expérimentales sur le sujet de l'explosion liée aux poussières, la première station d'essais dédiée à l'étude de la propagation de la poussière de charbon et de la question de la sécurité dans les mines, verra le jour en 1907 à Liévin dans le Pas-De-Calais. Jacques Taffanel (1875-1846), ingénieur des Mines, en devint le premier directeur. La station de Lièvin fût la première station d'essai de taille réelle capable d'étudier l'inflammabilité des poussières de charbon. Plus de mille explosions ont été réalisées durant sept années. De nombreuses expérimentations ont permis de tirer des conclusions sur l'inflammabilité des poussières. La station de Liévin a permis également de déterminer et faire reconnaître les conditions favorisant les explosions, comme les différences de composition du charbon, ou bien encore l'humidité de l'air. Les expériences menées à Liévin ont également permis de faire des préconisations relatives aux poussières de charbon comme : la schistification des galeries, les arrêts-barrages, surnommés taffanels, contre les poussières, et l'utilisation de grisoumètre. La présent publication de 1909 est la toute première publication donnant à lire les recherches expérimentales menées par Taffanel à Liévin. Elle est illustrée de quatre planches repliées de reproductions photographiques montrant les explosions de différents types de "poussières". Très bon exemplaire, en partie non coupé, portant un "Hommage au Comité central des Houllière de France" sous forme de cachet.
