Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. 1st Edition. Bound in bright green ribbed cloth with equally bright gilt titles, 265 pp. This is the memoir of the author's years in Idaho and Wyoming starting in 1887. He was ordained the first Episcopal missionary bishop for this territory when it was still the wild west.In his ten years in the west he established 38 churches and built St. Matthew's Cathedral in Laramie, Wyoming. An interesting story of his time there appears in Wiki: Surely you wouldn't rob a poor bishop?" said Talbot. "Did you say you were a bishop?" asked the bandit. "Yes, just a poor bishop." "What church?" "The Episcopal." "The hell you are! Why that's the church I belong to! Go along, driver."[1] Book with a neat early inscription on front end paper, largely unread.

Mormonism and the Mormons -- XVI. The Red-Man and Uncle Sam. -- `As I am writing this article, the question of permitting Senator Smoot,a Mormon apostle but not a polygamist, to retain his seat is now pending. It is at least significant that no charges are brought against him as to the purity of his family life. The real contention of this investigation now going on, is that Senator Smoot represents not the people of Utah, but the Mormon hierarchy, and that he should be debarred from his seat inthe Senate because he was nominated only after formally asking the consent of that hierarchy. Indeed, it is contended by those opposing him, with every show of proof, that he would have been opposed, defeated, and expelled from his office as an "apostle' if he had not promised implicit conformity withthe church's views and objects politically. In other words,it is claimed that Senator Smoot is not a free agent. When Brigham Roberts was refused admission to the House of Representatives it was because he was a confessed polygamist and not because he was a Mormon. Of course, the government recognizes no religious test, nor does it discriminate against any religious body per se.' (233 f.) Good orig. green cloth, g.t. Spine and upper edge dampstained.
