Researchers… refer to the animal as a unicorn and the object as a cult object. They assume that it is either a mythical creature or an animal shown from the side, whose second horn is covered by the first. The author is of the opinion that the animal was still alive at the time of the Indus culture and descended from an extinct cattle species Bos namadicus. The cult object is a symbol consisting of a combination of a basket made of plant fibres and the fruit of a fig tree. The unicorn of the Indus culture has nothing to do with the unicorn we are familiar with today. In the appendix, the author deals with the origin of the occidental unicorn. The idea of the western unicorn is based on three sources: Greek traditions, the Buddhist unicorn legend and allegorical in-terpretations of biblical passages.

Die Meinungen der Forscher gehen darüber auseinander, ob das System dezimal oder oktal war. Der Verfasser gelangt zu dem Ergebnis, dass… die Zahlzeichen der Induskultur ursprünglich mit kurzen und langen Strichen gebildet worden waren. Es gab an den Rangschwellen einen langen Strich für 100 und ein zusammengesetztes Zeichen aus einem vertikalen und einem horizontalen Strich für 1000. Das Zahlensystem war weder oktal, noch dezimal, sondern centesimal. Irgendwann stieß man auf Schwierigkeiten, wenn die Zahlen mit größerer Anzahl von kurzen Strichen geschrieben werden sollten. Man führte ein eigenes Zeichen für 10 ein, und das centesimale Zahlensystem wandelte sich zu einem dezimalen System.

Anhand der indischen Quellen zeigt der Verfasser, dass es sich bei diesem System nicht um eine einmalige Erfindung einer einz…elnen Person bzw. einer Schule handelte. Es entstand allmählich in der Zeit zwischen dem 5. Jh. und dem 6. Jh. durch einen Prozess des Zusammenwirkens von drei unterschiedlichen Zahlensystemen. Das Zeichen des Kreises für die Null ist aus der graphischen Darstellung der Ziffer 10 eines älteren Zahlensystems hervorgegangen.
