L'intento degli autori (storici, medici, antropologi) è di mostrare come la storia e le scienze sociali possano essere di ausilio a medici e pazienti, aiutandoli ad acquisire una maggiore consapevolezza del rapporto che li unisce anche nell'era della medicina tecnologica.
