Some argue that free trade has benefited people on both sides of the border, but it has been a disaster for Mexican farmers who cannot compete with the cheap corn, beans, and rice grown on US farms that are subsidized over $3 billion a year by the US government. Every day in Mexico, 60 small farmers go out of business and head for the shantytowns or for the border. The Mexican government, shackled with huge inflation and unemployment rates, does not discourage this exodus. These are the stories of courageous men who leave their families and homes pinning their hopes on rewards for working hard.
