Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. There is perhaps no issue in New Zealand today more contentious than water rights. The Crown claims that no one owns water, but its use, irrigation and treatment are controlled by local governments empowered by the Crown. Since the 1990s resource consents for the taking of water, in Canterb…ury and Southland especially, have increased dramatically and the environmental situation is reaching a breaking point. After years of discussion some kind of system regarding the ownership of water is inevitable. In Water Rights for Ngai Tahu, Te Maire Tau considers the historical and political framework that has contributed to the current state of water rights in the Ngai Tahu takiwa. He explores the customary, legal and Treaty frameworks that feed into the debate regarding the ownership of water. From 1844 to 1864 the Crown purchased more than 34.5 million acres of land from Ngai Tahu, but in most purchase deeds water is not mentioned. How does this play into claims to water? Should the Treaty be relied upon? How far can kaitiakitanga take us if the goal is mana motuhake and tino rangatiratanga? In this short book Te Maire Tau lays out the historical background and context to water rights, and opens a discussion about where to proceed next in determining a Ngai Tahu position on water. Paperback. Condizione: New. A uniquely collaborative analysis of human adaptation to the Polynesian islands, told through oral histories, biophysical evidence, and historical records Humans began to settle the area we know as Polynesia between 3,000 and 800 years ago, bringing with them material culture, including plants and a…nimals, and ideas about societal organization, and then adapting to the specific biophysical features of the islands they discovered. The authors of this book analyze the formation of their human-environment systems using oral histories, biophysical evidence, and historical records, arguing that the Polynesian islands can serve as useful models for how human societies in general interact with their environments. The islands' clearly defined (and relatively isolated) environments, comparatively recent discovery by humans, and innovative and dynamic societies allow for insights not available when studying other cultures. Kamana Beamer, Te Maire Tau, and Peter Vitousek have collaborated with a dozen other scholars, many of them Polynesian, to show how these cultures adapted to novel environments in the past and how we can draw insights for global sustainability today.

Aggiungi al carrelloSoftcover. Condizione: As New. First Edition. Unusually scarce in the trade, there being currently no additional copies available to the trade under $225 on-line. Sterling condition softcover copy, with unfurled tips, tight binding, and clean internals, showing only very slight shelf- and edge-wear. From the publisher's blurb, "…The dominant tribal group of southern New Zealand is Ngai Tahu. While Western historians interpret most of their history from written sources, Ngai Tahu's past (as we know it today) is a collection of oral traditions transmitted over generations, and finally written down by tohunga between the late 1840s and the 1920s. This book examines the nature and forms of Ngai Tahu oral traditions and identifies methodologies for analyzing and interpreting them. Through this approach one may appreciate how Ngai Tahu interpreted its past. With such an understanding, it is assumed that a history may be applied to the traditions. However, the primary object is not to construct a history, but to ask how, why, and by whom the oral traditions were formed, and how they may be unraveled to understand Ngai Tahu's past." Replete with all manner of tables and figures, genealogies and sharp photographs including some printed on high-gloss paper. Volume contains scholarly apparatus in the form of, e.g., notes, index, and bibliography. [9], 10-335 pp.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. Additional postage may be required for oversize or especially heavy volumes, and for sets.
