Hardcover. Condizione: New. Condizione sovraccoperta: New. 1st Edition. NEW First Edition hardcover (Orig. 2012) First Printing, NEW handsomely-illustrated mylar-protected jacket w/ sharp NEW edges & corners, PRISTINE interior handsomely printed on EXCELLENT acid-free archival paper * 6.36" x 9.50" x 1.52", 1.00 kg, xii+552 (564) pp * ABOUT THE BOOK: The first classics in human history (the early works of literature, philosophy, & theology to which we have returned throughout the ages) appeared in the middle centuries of the first millennium BCE. The canonical texts of the Hebrew scriptures, the philosophical writings of Plato & Aristotle, the Analects of Confucius & the Daodejing, the Bhagavad Gita & the teachings of the Buddha, all of these works came down to us from the compressed period of history that Karl Jaspers memorably named the Axial Age. In "The Axial Age and Its Consequences", Robert Bellah & Hans Joas make the bold claim that intellectual sophistication itself was born worldwide during this critical time. Across Eurasia, a new self-reflective attitude toward human existence emerged, & w/ it an awakening to the concept of transcendence. From Axial Age thinkers we inherited a sense of the world as a place not just to experience but to investigate, envision, & alter through human thought & action. Bellah & Joas have assembled diverse scholars to guide us through this astonishing efflorescence of religious & philosophical creativity. As they explore the varieties of theorizing that arose during the period, they consider how these in turn led to Utopian visions that brought w/ them the possibility of both societal reform & repression. The roots of our continuing discourse on religion, secularization, inequality, education, & the environment all lie in Axial Age developments. Understanding this transitional era, the authors contend, is not just an academic project but a humanistic endeavor. * ABOUT THE EDITORS: ROBERT N. BELLAH was Elliott Professor of Sociology, Emeritus, at the University of California, Berkeley; HANS JOAS is Permanent Fellow at the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies & Professor of Sociology & Social Thought at the University of Chicago. * SHIPPING: MNEMOSYNE carefully wraps, labels & custom-packages this fine book for FREE domestic shipment via USPS MEDIA MAIL or USPS PRIORITY MAIL for an additional fee & via USPS FIRST CLASS INTERNATIONAL AIRMAIL to all international destinations at our posted rates. …

Oversize Hardback. Condizione: Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. Book is in excellent condition with cream-orange heavy cloth covers, silver embossed print at cover and spine, decorated endpapers. printed on high quality paper. Book is as-new. Binding is solid and square, covers have sharp corners, exterior shows no blemishes, text/interior is clean and free of marking of any kind. Dust jacket shows edge wear, white sticker on back, some scuffing, no tears. Exhibition catalog for a show held at the publisher's gallery. First 68 pages is text with a few family photos, map. then half and full page full color prints of artist's work to page 178. 192 pages total. Martin Ramirez (1895-1963), the great self-taught draftsman of the twentieth century, left his native Los Altos de Jalisco, Mexico, in 1925 to find work in the United States and support his wife and children back home. Political struggles in Mexico and the economic consequences of the Great Depression left him stranded, jobless and homeless, on the streets of California in 1931. Unable to communicate in English and apparently confused, he was soon detained by the police and committed to a psychiatric hospital, where he would eventually be diagnosed as a catatonic schizophrenic. Ramirez hardly talked to anybody during those thirty-two years. Instead, he began to assemble found bits of paper--candy wrappers, greeting cards, flattened paper cups, hospital supply forms, and book pages, for example--using a self-made glue to create large surfaces for drawing. Sketched in graphite, colored pencil, or crayon, and often collaged with magazine illustrations, the artist's drawings range in size from several inches up to twelve feet. He was a master of pictorial space, using dramatic shifts in depth and scale to create a field in which multiple perspectives coexist. Ramirez's art depicts a variety of subjects, including caballeros, Madonnas, animals, trains, and tunnels. Memory and experience seep through each composition. While one strong component of Ramirez's work is the imagery of Mexico, another is an aesthetic found in the culture of mental illness. Martin Ramirez is the first book to give equal consideration to the biographical, historical, and cultural influences in Ramirez's oeuvre, its artistic quality and merit, and its standing in the context of the work of twentieth-century self-taught artists. An interdisciplinary exploration of Ramirez's life and complex, multilayered artwork, it presents a holistic examination of his drawings and collages beyond the boundaries of his diagnosed schizophrenia. Keywords: Mexican, Folk Art, Draftman, Line Drawings, Mental Institution, Tarmo Pasto, Mute, Artist, Art. Ramirez, Martin (illustratore).…

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good+. First American Edition. 12mo; 114 & [2] pages; Original publisher's binding: boards, with the front board printed with a duplicate of the title page, green calf spine, "paneled" with pairs of gilt rules, title lettered in gilt directly in the second panel. Wood-engraved frontispiece plate signed by "H" [= Alonzo Hartwell]. First published at London by Taylor and Hessey in 1817 under the title: "Correspondence between a mother and her daughter at school." First American edition. OCLC Number: 191257598 (12 locations); Shoemaker 30762; Stewart, C.D. 'Taylors of Ongar' A20j. "Mrs. Taylor" (1757-1830) was the wife of Isaac Taylor of Ongar, an engraver and later a dissenting minister. Together, Ann and Isaac Taylor were the progenators of an extensive literary family, of which the best known member today is probably their daughter Jane, who wrote the words for the song "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star." Jane, her older sister Ann, their mother Ann, and the Taylor family lived at Shilling Grange in Shilling Street Lavenham Suffolk in a house which still stands. Later (1796 -1810) the Taylors lived in Colchester, Essex, and then Ongar. Jane and Ann were mostly responsible for "Original Poems for Infant Minds by several young persons" (i.e. Ann and Jane Taylor and others); first issued in two volumes in 1804 and 1805. Rhymes for the Nursery followed in 1806, and Hymns for Infant Minds in 1808. Jane Taylor died of breast cancer at the age of 40, her mind still "teeming with unfulfilled projects." Jane's death generated early posthumous eulogies, including one which is very nearly a hagiography by her brother Isaac, and much of Ann's work came to be ascribed to Jane. Ann ruefully remarked of this fact that thus losing credit to her sister, she could ill afford and "which Jane certainly did not require." Ann and Jane's brothers, Isaac and Jefferys, also wrote; Isaac the younger was a theologian, but also the inventor of a patent beer tap. The elder brother Charles Taylor edited 'The Literary Panorama,' and younger brother Josiah was a publisher, chiefly of works on architecture and design. All the writing Taylors of Ongar were active in 1817 when "Correspondence between a mother and her daughter." appeared in London, and with the repetition of names, some confusion may result. It is worth stating clearly that this work is definately written by Ann, the mother -- Mrs. (Ann Martin) Taylor (1757â"1830), who wrote seven works of moral and religious advice, which were in many respects liberal for their time. The binding of this nicely preserved copy of the Boston 1827 edition matches the American Antiquarian Society "Copy A" - with green leather spine. (AAS copy "B" has a black leather spine and has its frontispiece sewn to the flyleaf). With the pencil signature of "Linda Halsted" at the head of the front cover. Some rubbing, toning and very minor stains to the covers, and significant foxing and toning to the leaves, with one pair of leaves near the center of the volume displaying a large, but not particularly intense stain (from a spill?). …
