Features 30 magnificent, full-page wood-engraved plates by the historic Victorian printmakers, the Brothers Dalziel, showcasing Myles Birket Foster's classic idyllic English rural scenery. The plates are pristine India Paper Proofs mounted onto heavy, high-quality stock. The volume is unnumbered in the traditional sense; instead, each engraving is accompanied by a facing page of letterpress text featuring descriptive poems by Tom Taylor, with each text page identified by a sequential Roman numeral (running from I to XXX). Dalziel Brothers circular motif stamped in black to the verso.Bound in light-coloured luxury cloth boards with heavily ornate, bright, reflective floral gilt decorations to the upper cover, lower cover, and spine. Features a circular "FB" cartouche to the rear cover. The main boards are remarkably clean and well-preserved, having been kept safe under suitable plastic protective covers. Spine ends show minor light bumping, with a small thumb-joint-sized area of minor dulling restricted to the spine tips. The gilt remains exceptionally bright and reflective.Internally fine, crisp, and clean. This copy boasts a distinguished provenance, bearing the pictorial bookplate of renowned British bibliophile, lawyer, and author Charles Plumptre Johnson (1853-1938) on the front pastedown.
