Full title - MISSISSIPPI, A HISTORY; A NARRATIVE HISTORICAL EDITION PRESERVING THE RECORD OF THE GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE STATE TOGETHER WITH GENEALOGICAL AND MEMORIAL RECORDS OF ITS PROMINENT FAMILIES AND PERSONAGES. VOLUME I, II, III, and IV. All hardcover, H 26.75cm x L 17.75cm, uniformly bound…in original blue cloth without dust jackets; some rubbing and a few light stains to boards; light scuffing at spine ends and at board corner tips; usual slight dulling/flaking to spine's gilt stamping but all still easily legible. Slight soiling to text block edges. Marbled endpapers. Occasional foxing/toning to leaves but overall interior pages for all four volumes remain clean. Bindings share a few stress points but are otherwise firm. VOLUME I: Paged as i-xvi, 1-486 pages; text features Chapters I-XXXVIII reviewing state history from DeSoto's initial exploration to the 1920-1924 governorship of Lee M. Russell. VOLUME II: Paginated as [4], 487-978; text inclusive to page 595 (Chapters XXXIX-XLVI) edited by George H. Ethridge examines the state's history from the administration of Governor H.L. Whitfield through Governor Hugh L. White with several concluding chapters regarding Mississippi Indian tribes, education from 1870-1938, the liquor traffic, public health and sanitation, and churches. Pages 597 onward feature biographical entries and occasional b/w photographs of prominent citizens with some historical genealogy all edited by Walter Nesbit Taylor. VOLUME III: Paginated as [4], 979-1478; text features biographical entries. VOLUME IV: Paginated as [4], 1479-1982; text features biographical entries and concludes with index for biographies of Vols II-IV and separate index for the history text of Vols I-II. An uncommon set of books which is encountered far less often than Dunbar Rowland's similar 1925 four volume history-biography combination set titled HISTORY OF MISSISSIPPI; THE HEART OF THE SOUTH. But, like Rowland's set, the biographies are flattering (nary a critical word to be found) and testify to stalwart pillar-of-the-community qualities of the featured prominent citizens, planters, politicians, lawyers, doctors, businessmen, etc. all of whom probably paid for their inclusion and/or were subscribers to the set prior to publication. Please note that this set has an approximate shipping weight of 14.75 pounds (6.69 kg) and will require additional postage for any postal class other than domestic Media Mail. {MS-Shelf-#3}.
