A whimsical bookplate of the librarian and bookman Joseph L. Wheeler, designed by the British artist C. Walter Hodges to front endpaper. Pedro Antonio de Alarcón y Ariza (10 March 1833 19 July 1891) was a nineteenth-century Spanish novelist, author of the novel El Sombrero de Tres Picos (The Three-Cornered Hat, 1874). The story is an adaptation of a popular tradition and provides a lively picture of village life in Alarcón's native region of Andalusia. It was the basis for Hugo Wolf's opera Der Corregidor (1897) and Manuel de Falla's ballet The Three-Cornered Hat (1919). Translated by Martin Armstrong, jacket by John Farliegh. First published by Gerald Howe in 1927, number eight in Howe's Soho Library of pocket editions. Hardcover. Condizione: Good+. Norman Tealby (illustratore). 129 Pages. Color illustrations by Norman Tealby. This is a book about some old Spanish tales and ballads as they were told to Pedro De Alarcon. The book's exterior is in poor to fair condition with four worn corners, worn areas at the top and bottom of the spine, worn places on all edges and finally worn areas on both the front and rear covers. The inside book, however, outside of a former owner's bookplate inside the front cover, the shadow of what once was probably a sticker on the first blank page in from the front, and lastly its tanned pages, has no further visible extraneous markings, stickers, detriments or distractions throughout the book and thus all of the book's printing and its numerous wonderfull colored illustrations are all in a well-preserved and enjoyable condition and the book's bindings remain tight and therefore are sound. If you order this classic piece of local spanish literature from us, we will carefully wrap it up, then box and pad it and mail it right away to you with both insurance and tracking on it and it will come with our honest gratitude for your order.

"One of the best-loved Spanish novels of all time, A hilarious tale of lust, intrigue and corrupt authorities set in eighteenth-century Andalusia. When the hideous and lascivious corregidor Don Eugenio takes a fancy to the formidable - and formidably desirable - Senora Frasquita, the wife of a local miller, the couple set about foiling his plans for a seduction. There ensues a fast-paced comedy of moonlight flits, clothes swapping, mistaken identity, and slapstick accidents as the characters struggle in vain to maintain both dignity and marital harmony. Calm is eventually restored in a scene of unmasking and mutual forgiveness of truly operatic proportions." Size: Large Octavo. Book.
