De West-Indische Compagnie (WIC) beschikte over een uitstekende inlichtingendienst. In opdracht van hoofdkaartenmaker Hessel Gerritsz leverden uit de West terugkerende functionarissen hun lo…gboeken in op het West-Indisch Huis in Amsterdam. Daar werden alle nautische, geografische, militaire en economische details systematisch geïnventariseerd. In 1629 werd daaruit een eerste Braziliaans Handboek samengesteld, bedoeld voor de commandanten van de invasiemacht die begin 1630 een bruggenhoofd in Pernambuco veroverde. Toen Hessel Gerritsz in 1632 overleed besefte WIC-directeur Johannes de Laet het belang van diens rijke archief. De tijd voor een nieuw Braziliaans Handboek was rijp toen in 1636 graaf Johan Maurits van Nassau-Siegen werd benoemd tot Gouverneur-Generaal van Nederlands Brazilië. Om hem over zijn ambtsgebied te informeren stelde De Laet met spoed een nieuw Handboek samen, dat begin 1637 naar Pernambuco werd verscheept. Sindsdien was de bundel uit het zicht verdwenen, totdat hij in 1977 na vele omzwervingen opdook in de John Carter Brown Library in Providence (USA). Het Handboek wordt nu voor het eerst in het Nederlands uitgegeven. Het bevat nieuwe feiten over vroeg-17de-eeuws Brazilië. Hoogwaardig inlichtingenwerk, dat ons een spannend beeld schetst van de Nederlandse expansie in Brazilië en de felle concurrentiestrijd met de Portugezen om de handel in suiker, verfhout en tabak.
