Kirishitan-ban were books printed by the Societas Iesu in romaji or kanji at the end of the 16th century/start of the 17th century. These books, designed for a Japanese audience as part of missionary activities (particularly of Italian…Jesuit missionary Alessandro Valignano), are now extremely rare. This book comprises an introduction in English, 4 p. of colour plates, a text section (in Japanese - approximately half of the book), and numerous b&w photographic plates of selected kirishitan-ban (making up the rest of the book). Text in Japanese. In8vo. 8, 352 p. 1400gr. Original brown cloth, title lettered to spine in gilt. Includes original slipcase (small tear on a slip case). Otherwise in near fine condition.
