In risposta alle "inique sanzioni" decretate dalla Società delle Nazioni contro l'Italia a causa dell'aggressione all'Etiopia nel 1935, il regime fascista lanciò una campagna di mobilitazione affinché gli i…taliani donassero "oro alla Patria". La campagna ebbe il suo momento alto nella "giornata della fede" in cui le coppie italiane, e in primo luogo le donne, furono chiamate a donare le loro fedi matrimoniali e sostituirle con anelli senza valore, come fece la stessa regina. Di là dalla raccolta di risorse, che ebbe risultati notevoli seppure irrisori a paragone dei costi della guerra, la campagna fu uno spettacolare evento di propaganda e mobilitazione, fra consenso popolare e cooperazione forzosa, l'apice di quella teatralizzazione della politica che il fascismo prediligeva. Petra Terhoeven ha studiato questo evento tanto nel suo svoglimento concreto quanto nei suoi significati simbolici, in particolare per quanto riguarda l'individuazione delle donne come destinatarie prime della propaganda.
