Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. The Mexica Manuscript was discovered about twelve years ago hidden in a niche of a burried wall during excavations in the Cathedral Square of Mexico City. Written in an early form of the Nahautl language by Tlacaelel, the principle advisor of three kings whose reigns encompass the creation of the Aztec empire, and long thought to be the man responsible for the bizarre form it assumed, the document has been the subject of extensive study by archaeologists and anthropologists interested in prehistoric Mesoamerica. This book, however, is intended for a wider audience. Intrigued by the contemporary relevance of the ideas it contains, the author has prepared an English translation, modernized the syntax, and included interpretive comments to make Tlacaelel's reflections available to scholars in other fields. Reflections that offer brief glimpses of known and unknown aspects of Aztec history, colorful descriptions of bloody battles and cruel rituals, and above all, penetrating insights concerning the human condition and the ancient problem of evil in the world. Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. It is easy to understand why the supposed author of this book says it is one he "never intended to write." He and a colleague, both dedicated theoretical physicists, go for a hike in the Santa Rita Mountains, take a wrong turn, and nearly perish of thirst before chancing on two deep pools of clear water; which happen to be located at the base of a "mini mountain" on a 40-acre parcel of Kinero Ranch, which also happens to be for sale. For some odd reason he feels compelled to buy it - and thus becomes an amateur anthropologist! Initially, he merely attempts to discover the origin of the Pima Indians living around the nearby Mission of Tumacacori by tracing the "threads" of their myths and legends. But these lead him to the Hopi mesas of northern Arizona, south along the Santa Cruz River and around Padre Kino's Missions, down to the ancient city and unknown people of Teotihuacan in central Mexico, then up again to his Kinero, with a wealth of undigested information and an inflamed imagination. This, operating on some curious artifacts recovered from the sandy bottom of one of the pools, generates not only a series of feverish fantasies about the past of the place, but also so many unscientific ideas that he is lead to become an equally amateur humanist, write a strange little novelette, and finally the rest of the book, to explain them to himself. The result, as his mentor Dr. Colbert remarks in the Foreword, is "not entirely without value," even for anthropologists, and should prove entertaining for a wide variety or readers. Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Tyler Trent, the young man whose letters are featured herein, describes one of his revealing visions as "a dream within a dream.". In a similar sense this is a book written within a book; the outer shell a brief account of the author's research in the cognitive and neurosciences, the inner core a summary of their correspondence extending from Tyler's undergraduate days to his untimely death. In effect the letters constitute his autobiography, edited in such a way as to highlight the unusual mental powers that originally inspired the author's research and helped him develop his well-known model of the brain processed, powers which he comes to believe may represent the next stage of human evolution. A singe "case study" like this can hardly prove such a belief to be true. But the highly original contributions to computer technology Tyler's intuitive gifts enabled him to make in his fifteen years of professional life, plus the fact that throughout history many of our most influential ideas have originated in the same way, strongly suggests that it may be. The avalanche of information that threatens to engulf us is certainly a challenge comparable to the climactic changes of the ice age that forced the evolution of homo sapiens; and if exploiting the existing resources of the subconscious minds is a possible way of coping with it, then surely, as the author suggests, the brain mutation which makes this possible should be encouraged to spread more rapidly. Paperback. . . . suddenly the screen went blank, and a tone like a distant bell sounded, and the message given below appeared in clean white letters on a dark blue background: ***ATTENTION*** Please do not be alarmed, your work has been saved and may be restored whenever you choose. What follows are narratives by four different individuals describing their encounter with one who, despite different appearances, I believe to be the same person, and whose parables I feel sure you will find meaningful. The accounts are presented unaltered, just as written by Mathias, Martin, Lucas, and Jonathan. My identity does not matter, I am merely the collector and transmitter. This begins the computer virus that interrupted the work of Raoul Thomas, a young scientist in California - and changed his life . Beware! The parables told by the Stranger may change yours too. Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. A winsome tale with a light touch, of a frustrated academic who goes bad - or at least keeps trying to - in order to acquire enough cash to resign from the United States. But the light touch is deceptive. His associations with a series of very non-academic types leads to unexpected insights and an intriguing, if "illogical," conclusion. This item is printed on demand. Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Just after turning the corner of 40, the rather improbably hero featured herein published "The One-Fold Way," in a small notably unacclaimed book documenting his series of barely legal (and one slightly illegal) schemes designed to acquire enough capital to "resign from the USA" - but resulting instead in the discovery of Illogical Positivism. This marvelous operational principle not only made his immigration unnecessary, but also worked so well that as the corner of 60 approaches he feels the need to try again, supplementing it with supporting ideas acquired in the meantime from various cultural categories (Art, Religion, Government, Philosophy, Technology, and Science). But to do so in the most attractive and least offensive way, he decides to embed it and them in a science fiction novel, "The STAR Panel." After writing the first chapter, however, he finds that he lacks enough data from the working level of several of the categories to continue. The obvious solution was to do as he had 20 years before; utilize his summer vacations to penetrate, appropriate low-level organizations incognito. This does indeed supply the data, and, somewhat to his surprise, two additional principles, thereby creating a Three-Fold Way; but also, unfortunately, a somewhat dull novel - until he inspired to interweave it's chapters with accounts of the adventures preceding them. The result is both substantial and highly entertaining, leaving one hoping for the Five-Fold Way he anticipates may follow in another twenty years or so, a possibly a Seven-Fold Way after that! Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. "His heart had stopped beating! There was no pain, but no warning either, and at first he did not know what has happening." These words introduce a deepening mystery. Alone in his laboratory late at night, Dr. Albert Lamerlin, a famous scientist of a prominent research institute, is suddenly stricken. His last act is to scrawl a curious symbol resembling an "I" on the floor in his own blood, and it soon develops that this symbol may be the key to an unexpectedly strange life. When his personal belongings are examined an odd document is discovered which suggests that he may have been 200 years old! Assembling the staff of the institute in the Tower conference room, the Director suggests that the dying man may have been trying to write out the formula of a serum responsible for his astonishing longevity, as well as his very high intelligence - and the "I Quest" begins. One after another the principle scientists, accompanied by their young assistants, attempt to unravel the dead man's past in the hope of discovering this magical formula; and though their startling adventures confirm the Director's surmise, none are successful until. But it would be unwise to continue. In the end much more is discovered than a mere "Fountain-of-Youth" formula, and too little space remains to do it justice. Why not start reading at the beginning? Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Cdan, a historian of the far future, is granted leave to travel back in time to test his theories of intellectual evolution. Establishing a holographic presence to conduct his classes, he is transported to Spelstar, an off-earth entertainment center, where vast data banks and sophisticated computer technology make possible reconstruction of the past from the ancestral trace existing in the brain of each individual. With increasing wonder he relives brief episodes as a succession of his forebearers - a technician in an early lunar colony, a courtier of King Henry III's time, a Viking raider, a medieval novice monk, a Roman senator, and others back to 10,000 B.C. By then, he believes, the true nature of man has become apparent. This item is printed on demand. Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Discerning historians have long suspected creativity in the arts and creativity in the sciences to be related in some mysterious way. This book attempts to dispel the mystery by analyzing the works, and the working methods of an artist and a scientist of acknowledged genius - the poet Emily Dickinson and the theoretical physicist Willard Gibbs. The comparison is given force, not only by the analysis, but also by the similarities in their lives and surroundings; both were products of the late nineteenth century mini-renaissance that flowered briefly in New England. In the end, the boundary between the "two cultures" begins to fade, and theoretical physics emerges as a form of poetry. This item is printed on demand.
