La venta de niños campesinos suizos como deshollinadores, por parte de padres muy pobres, y la situación de esclavitud y explotación que estos niños sufren en Italia es el argumento del libro. La situación de hambre, enfermedad y miseria se contrapone a la solidaridad que estos muchachos desarrollan a través de una organización en la que se apoyan y protegen.
