Aggiungi al carrelloA short note in ink, approx. 55 words, from Stephen G. Thacher to a Mr. Richards in which he states he had made an error in his statement about the price of the Chapel [sp?] farm. He had misread the letter from the Commissioners of the School Funds regarding it and hoped that Richards would call on him to straighten things out.…The property was in fact "considerably less than I mentioned to you." Below the note is another attempt at explaining the situation, a partial sentence only, in a different hand, and with an 1822 date. This may have been a draft of a letter only. Old fold lines, short closed tears across a couple of the folds, browning and chipping to edges. The address to Richards on the verso has been obscured by a manuscript copy (lacking a few of the final lines) of a William Henry Harrison campaign song from 1840 entitled "Old Tippecanoe," with first line of text: "Hurra for the father of all the green west." [see: The Harrison and Log Cabin Song Book, (Columbus: 1840), p. 7]. We have found a Stephen Greenleaf Thacher (1774-1857), a farmer, living in Montville, Connecticut at this time. According to a family genealogy, he was on the visiting committee of the Chesterfield Society (ie: Montville) in 1813 and 1814. Perhaps he is the author of this note.
