Cloth, 8vo, xviii, 116 pp. From the Introduction: "Firstly [this work] is intended to be an aid in the identification and placing in their context of books produced or sold in the NorthEast of England by bringing together all that is known of the region's printers and booksellers. Secondly it is a contribution to the economic history of the booktrade showing its growth in the North-East, and (where information is available) attempting to indicate the scale and nature of each business. All the information given is backed by references to sources.The area covered by the Dictionary is that of the two counties of Northumberland and Durham. Included are the names of principals in the booktrade within this area - i.e. the names of apprentices and journeymen are excluded unless they subsequently became principals. The earliest tradesman mentioned is W. Corbett, Bookseller, Stationer and Bookbinder of Newcastle, who died in 1626. The latest names are those of tradesmen who entered business in 1859-60. No systematic attempt has been made to trace careers subsequent to 1860. All trades associated with the production and distribution of books and other printed matter are included with the single exception of papermakers (unless they practised other booktrades as well). The trades distinguished include - Printers, Engravers, Lithographers, Booksellers, Stationers, Publishers, Mapsellers, Print-sellers, Musicsellers, Bookbinders, Newsagents, and owners of circulating libraries. The letterhead carries an engraving (6.5 x 9.5 cm) of a pile of books, quill pen and ink pot, with text advertising the 'Imprimerie, Librairie et Cabinet de Lecture d'Aubin' printed on the open pages of one of the volumes. Beneath the illustration are the words 'LE MÉMORIAL D'AIX, journal politique et littéraire', and there is further text to the right and left of it. In French. Written, in two hands, in light blue ink. A five-line initial note, asking for the books to be quoted at the lowest possible price, is followed by the list in another hand, in two columns continuing to the end of the second page. Will you be good enough to put one under cover with my name & an outer cover to address of the Hon Abbott Laurence Boston [businessman and philanthropist], and send it to John Miller Esq. No: 24 Henrietta St. Covent Garden, and I shall be sure to get it.' All three items in good condition, on lightly aged paper. The two Aitken letters are both signed 'G A Aitken'. ONE: ALS by Aitken, 3 December 1907. 3pp., 12mo. Bifolium. He begins by suggesting an emendation to a note on an 'enclosed proof' regarding Dr Pearce and 'The Tatler'. He then discusses a reprint by the firm of his edition of the 'Spectator', which he has not seen. 'If it bears a current date on the title-page, I trust you have preserved the date to the Preface, to show that I have not revised the work. After ten years some corrections or additions could no doubt be made, and in such cases it ought, in the editor's interests, be made clear that the work is a mere reprint, without revision.' He ends by stating that he presumes that the firm 'have incorporated in their proper places the "Errata" at the end'. TWO: ANS by Aitken, 6 December 1907. 1p., 12mo. ANS. He thanks them for their letter (Item Three below), and for the volume of the 'Spectator', concluding: 'The note you have printed in the book is quite satisfactory'. THREE: Copy of Typed Letter from George Routledge & Sons, Ltd, 4 December 1907. Informing Aitken that they are 'printed the book as per proof sent to you', and that as soon as 'our little reprint of your edition is completed we are proposing to send you a set for your kind acceptance'. In the meantime they are sending the first volume, 'from which you will see we hahve added a note stating that the book is a reprint from the 1898 edition'.
