Four pages, printed in black, with the first and fourth pages carrying a few words in red. The first page, headed 'THE GEHENNA SHAKESPEARE' in red, begins, 'The Gehenna Press, marking its twentieth year of dedication to the art of making worthy books, is pleased to announce its plan of printing, during the coming decade, a noble edition in imperial folio of the complete tragedies, histories, comedies and poems of William Shakespeare.' Announces that 'Titus Andronicus is now ready for subscribers'. Pages 2 and 3 are specimens, page 3 carrying an illustration by Baskin. The last page gives limitation and price, and describes the physical production of the first volume (paper by the Strathmore papermakers' Woronoco mill, hand-binding by Arno Werner, type by Bruce Rogers supplied by McKenzie & Harris of San Francisco ('Our debt to Colonel Carroll Harris for his selfless and expert guidance is very great.'). 'The Gehenna Shakespeare' has been described as 'one of the great failures of the press', which, according to Baskin, 'dropped into the pit labeled 'hubris typographicus'': only two volumes appeared, and shortly afterwards Basking left America for Devon, England, where he remained, near his idol Ted Hughes, for nine years.…

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Fine. Hardcover. One of 250 numbered copies, with a signed linecut portrait of Woolman by Leonard Baskin on the title page and an additional copy of the portrait on Japanese paper, also signed, is laid in. The portrait is based on a drawing done from memory by Robert Smith III. This edition was printed at The Gehenna Press to memorialize the bicentennial of John Woolman's death in 1772. This is a reprint of Woolman's book that was first published by James Chattin in Philadelphia in 1754. Woolman was a Quaker who advocated the abolition of slavery. This copy is unique in that it was personally bound by master binder Arno Werner for himself, with his label affixed to the front pastedown bearing his initials and his name written there in ink. His beautiful binding is in full brown morocco, with titling in gilt to cover and spine, with blind and gilt rules, and turn-in gilt with an oakleaf roll design. Arno Werner (1899-1995), was a German-born bookbinder who was credited with keeping the craft alive in the United States, His work, often executed in painstakingly hand-tooled morocco leather, was marked by a sturdy yet elegant simplicity. Until 1982 he was chief bookbinder for rare editions at the Houghton Library at Harvard University. A modest man, he quietly spent years working 12-hour days, doing good work, and training fine young people to carry on the craft. His emotional and financial support of former apprentices is legendary. Printed in Centaur and Arrighi types on Fabriano paper, and printed by master pressman Harold McGrath. With marbled endpapers by Arno Werner. The text was completed in 1970 but the afterword by Frederick Tolles was not printed until 1975. Housed in a brown cloth clamshell box with a leather spine with gilt titling. The box is also lined with Werner's marbled papers and has his label with his initials. Inside the box is a letter dated March 1985 to David Block of The Book Block from Bromer Bookselllers saying that they would hold a copy of the Baskin Woolman print for ten days. In fine condition in a near fine clamshell box. Measures 5.5 x 8 inches. 85 pages plus 6 pages printed on blue paper with an afterword on Woolman and slavery. PRI/100224. Signed.…

Aggiungi al carrelloGroup of 5 Autograph Letters Signed, "Leonard" or "Lennie," to various recipients, expressing satisfaction at his having sold a copy of his book, [Horned Beetles and Other Insects (1958)], reporting no familiarity with Dr. A. Roos, requesting confirmation that he sold a work [at 'ART : USA : 59' exhibition held at the New York Coliseum beginning April 5, 1959], reporting completion of a wood carving entitled "Man with the Owl," sending photographs of an unidentified sculpture [not present], hoping that the buyer would allow Boris [Mirski Gallery] to show it, sending a bill for moving an unnamed work to New York [not present], complaining that the move interrupted his Boston exhibition [likely at Boris Mirski Gallery], sending a document to sign [not present], requesting a check, giving an address for ordering a catalogue of available Gehenna Press books, thanking for an appraisal, promising to complete some works, and requesting that he arrange a swap for a papal medal. Each 1 page, 8vo or small 4to, some on "Gehenna Press" stationery; faint uneven toning to second, folds. One with the original envelope. 27 April 1959: "I had hoped that if you sold the insect book that we might arrive at a lesser commission, but since you sold it for $50 more than the published price, I am content. Don't feel contrite about your high price however, since the book is now virtually out of print, only 2 left, & they are sort of bespoke. . . . "I hear humbly that something of mine sold at the ART 59 USA. True? What? Tell grace I enjoyed her piece in the cat[alogue?]. "I finished the woodcarving of the 'Man with the Owl' & am loth to part with it. If you would like to have it in N.Y.C. tell me." 30 October 1960: ". . . [T]he world's worst photos . . . give a notion of the sculpture. If the very dark ones are held against a very strong light, much more is revealed. "I certainly hope that Mrs. [Albert A.] List, if she buys the piece, will let Boris show it. Tell her it would be a bigger mitzvah than the a.f.a. visiting her pad." 20 November 1960: ". . . I think this properly is Mrs. List's affair, since the piece was brought to NYC at her convenience. ". . . I am in no mood to be sporting . . . with her. Her capricious desire for her new bauble for her reception knocked the genitals so to speak out of my Boston show. . . ." 19 October 1992: ". . . Directly I finish the holocaust maquettes[;] I will model mourning weeds. The Henri IV is by Danfries[?], an interest'g late 16th C engraver. The medal was recast in 1930 but y'r model seems period. Try to arrange a swap for that papal medal with Ross.". …
