Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. No Jacket. First Edition First Printing. Light blue cover with red leaf. Undated circa 1940's. About 9-1/2 x 6-1/4 with about ninety pages. Secure binding with clean pages and light cover edge wear. From The New York Times: Scribner Book Store, 75, Will Close Next Month By HERBERT MITGANG Publis…hed: December 07, 1988 The handsome Scribner Book Store on Fifth Avenue - a symbol of literary continuity since 1913 and part of the only landmark building in New York City originally designed to house a bookstore -will close on Jan. 22. The reason is a tale of precious Manhattan real estate, one as familiar as some of the stories that can be found on the bookshelves under the grand staircase and vaulted two-story interior. The building has been sold and the new owner is making extensive interior renovations - only the exterior has landmark status - that will drive up the costs of occupancy. The bookstore's owner, in turn, believes the new rent will be so high as to make the store unprofitable. ''A chapter of history is about to close,'' said Charles Scribner 3d, a vice president at Macmillan, which acquired the Scribner Book Companies in 1984, the same year the Scribner family sold its Fifth Avenue building. Mr. Scribner is a direct descendant of the Charles Scribner who established the venerable publishing house in 1846. Its 20th-century authors include Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald and Thomas Wolfe. 'The Story of New York' Size: 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Book.

Paperback. Condizione: Very good. 1st Edition 1st Printing. 96 pages. Softcover book in very good condition. Annotated catalogue of American historical fiction books offered by New York's famed Scribner bookstore. A fun catalogue of the classic days of bookselling and an era where a mint signed advance review copy of GONE WITH T…HE WIND sold for $25 while a first edition of Robert W. Chambers' CARDIGAN brought $50. Today the WIND would easily bring over $10,000 while the Chambers would still sell for $50! Nonetheless, the pleasure in a catalogue such as this in its exactly such connections and the well-written annotations are still useful to anyone with an interest in the subject.

A CATALOGUE OF F…AMILIAR QUOTATIONS IN THEIR EARLIEST APPEARANCES : SCRIBNER CATALOGUE NUMBER 102. [NOTE: This is catalogue #102, the first edition published in 1935, and should not be confused with Scribner's catalogue 139 which has the same title but did not appear until 1954.] Two-page introduction, unsigned, but probably by the legendary antiquarian bookseller David Randall: "The present catalogue is an attempt to present a new path in book collecting." Described here are the first appearances in print of famous phrases such as: "If at first you don't succeed," "My candle burns at both ends," "Mary had a little lamb," "The lips that touch liquor must never touch mine," Rock of ages," "Tweedle-dum and "tweedle-dee;" etc. Although the entries are unnumbered, there are approximately 140 items described (1 per page), most with useful annotations.
