Martinique, 1902, and the eruption of Mont Pelec is the setting for the novel of the romance of Tom Carruthers and Medora Hardin, daughter of the man who had caused his father's suicide in Pennsylvania. Madora is now married to Paul Durand, whose family estates and sugar plantations mean luxury and wealth; Tom is working for Yankee Hitchcock, a merchant with a marriageable daughter, Nell. Tom senses Paul's subtle persecution and intimidation of Medora, traces the links to the past that have made her vulnerable, recognizes the use that Paul is making of him and has hopes, with the devastation that the eruption brings with it, that Paul's death will free Medora for him. But Paul is not dead and even the knowledge that his native mistress had tried to kill Medora cannot prevent Tom from letting her know her husband still lives. It is up to an old enemy of Paul's to write a finish to Medora's bondage, to make certain Tom's hopes for her love. St. Pierre, the harbors and towns, the plantations, social life and customs, the delights and doubts of a world alien to Americans, the threats of a volcano coming to life and its total destruction -- these fill the story with tropic color, atmosphere and incident. A clean very presentable copy in a Brodart mylar jacket.

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Don't know what to make of this! Most copies of this book that I see are published by Blakiston and, quite rightly, not listed as a first edition since Blakiston was a publisher of reprints and book club editions. However, this copy, although published by Doubleday (which acquired Blakiston in 1944, the year this was published) there is no "first edition" statement, just the matching 1944 dates on title page and copyright page. The book was published in June 1944, so my guess is that this is an early reprint from the same year. The only other title of Ms Strabel's listed in this book is "Reap the Wild Wind", which was published first in a magazine, and in book form in 1941, and which is best known for the movie it inspired. Anyhow, this "Storm in the South" novel is a romance of Peru in the time of Bolivar and was described as a "Glamorous tale of a dramatic period." There is a name and previous owner's small address label on front pastedown, the edges are a little browned and spine ends are slightly softened, but a very good copy.
