Durch die Gunst seines Landesherrn, des calvinistischen Johann I. von Pfalz-Zweibrücken, erhält er im Kloster Hornbach eine umfassende humanistische Ausbildung. In einer Zeit der Religionskriege steht Hock auf der Seite der Protestanten. So kommt er nach Prag und in den Dienst des böhmischen Adligen Peter Wok von Rosenberg. 1601 erscheint 'Schönes Blumenfelda oe in einer einzigen zeitgenössischen Auflage. Aus den neunzig Gedichten haben die Herausgeber die besten 56 ausgewählt. Der Band präsentiert die Gedichte in ihrer originalen Fassung und einer dem Barocken ähnelnden Schrift a ' und daneben in vorsichtig modernisierter Übertragung zur besseren Lektüre. Hocks Gedichte mischen oft Ernst und Spaß, Lehrhaftes und Belustigendes. Dem Spaßigen stehen Vergänglichkeitsklagen gegenüber.
