Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good+. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. Third Edition. Expanding a 1928 paper "On Character Analysis" that forged the way for "a new epoch in psychoanalysis,'' Reich here incorporates Freud's notion of "overcoming resistances" in the patient to examine "character resistances" that serve as a type of armor, & that must be overcome. Since the publication of the first edition of this work in 1933, published in German, & a second edition in English in 1945, this current Third Enlarged Edition from 1949 further expands his theories with his work on "cosmic orgone energy" & new understanding of the biological basis of neurosis. In 516 pages, including Index & the author's prefaces to all three editions, this 8vo has tan cloth-covered boards stamped with dark brown lettering to front & spine. Exceptionally clean & bright, pages white, binding straight & strong, hinges secure. Pages white. Downgraded to VG+ due to former owner's underlining in pencil to many sentences in a section on the treatment of a schizophrenic woman & his name stamp to bottom outside page edge; else totally clean. The unclipped DJ is VG, with chipping at both ends of spine, underlining in pen to both flaps, slight spine fading; nicely protected in new mylar cover Free! Hardcover. Condizione: Good+. Condizione sovraccoperta: No Dust Jacket. Illustrated by William Steig (illustratore). First American Edition; First Printing. Beige cloth covers with red lettering on spine and lettering and illustration on front cover. The book is in good plus condition overall, with some scuffing, soiling and wear to the covers and soiling and staining to the page edges. There is a bit of browning and staining to the pages, but the contents are otherwise clean and tight. ; An early book illustrated by William Steig, who considered Reich to be his "favorite thinker", with many in-text and full page drawings. ; Black and white full page and in text drawings; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 126 pages; Reich, an Austrian doctor, was considered to be one of the most controversial figures in psychoanalysis. He escaped the Nazi take-over of Austria and emigrated to the United States in 1939. After Pearl Harbor, he was arrested and detained for three weeks by the FBI and it wasn't until 1947 when the US determined that he and the Oregone Institute weren't engaged in subversive activities. "Listen, Little Man! " was originally published as an essay in German (Rede an den kleinen Mann) in which Reich described his libetarian socialist philosopy and how common people can be their own worse enemies. In 1952, the FDA issued an injunction that all orgone equipment be destroyed and all related literature be seized. In 1956, six tons of Reich's papers, journals and books were burned. In 1957, Reich was imprisoned and in November of that year, he died in Lewisburg Federal Penitentiary.

Softcover. Condizione: Very Good. First Edition. Volume I, Number 1 - Volume 3, Numbers 2 and 3 (two double issues). Five of the first seven issues (of only nine total issues) published, lacking Volume I, Number 3 and Volume 2, Number 1. Small quartos. Approximately 525 pages total. Each issue with the owner name and stamp of noted American psychologist Henry Guze, a cofounder of the Society for the Scientific Study of Sex, on the front cover. Wrappers with moderate wear and soil, occasional shallow edge loss, crown of one volume neatly strengthened, and another with a 4½" closed tear on the rear cover (touching no edges), a sound, near very good set. The text has been nicely preserved. One issue with a renewal card and mailing envelope laid in. A run of this uncommon journal published by Wilhelm Reich's controversial Orgone Institute. The articles contributed by Reich are: "About the History and the Activities of Our Institute"; "The Orgasm Reflex. A Case History"; "Biophysical Functionalism and Mechanistic Natural Science"; "The Discovery of the Orgone"; "The Carcinomatous Shrinking Biopathy"; "The biological miscalculation in the human struggle for freedom"; "Work democracy versus politics"; Thermical and electroscopical orgonometry (The discovery of the orgone, Part 2)"; "The masochistic character"; "Orgonotic Pulsation"; and "The 'Living Productive Power, Working Power' of Karl Marx." Additional articles by Ernst Walter, Paul Martin, Theodore P. Wolfe, Walter Frank ("Vegetotherapy"), Mary Robert, Carl Arnold, Lucille Bellamy, and Dorothy I. Post, and Reviews and Notes by other contributors. The inaugural issue states that the journal would be published three times a year. However, it seems that, aside from the first year, it was published just twice annually, the second volume being a double issue. The journal ceased publication in November 1945 with Volume 4, Numbers 2/3, making the journal's entire run just nine issues.
