Thillaye est issu d'une famille de savants, il fut lui-même chirurgien du premier régiment des Gardes-d'Honneur et chirurgien des Gardes-du-Corps du roi, dans la compagnie de Noailles. Ce texte est sa thèse soutenue le 29 août 1814 à la Faculté de Médecine. S'il a choisi ce sujet, c'est parce qu'il était attaché à l'hôpital militaire de Madrid, et que lorsque les troupes françaises eurent essuyé des revers en juin et juillet 1808, Madrid fut évacuée, mais sans le transport des malades qui furent faits prisonniers de guerre. Il subit alors le même sort, car il resta à son poste. Très vite, la mortalité devint si importante que les prisonniers furent conduits aux îles Baléares. Cabréra fut choisi comme lieu de détention. Thillaye y resta 14 mois. Dans cette dissertation, il décrit l'île de Cabréra, expose l'état des prisonniers et leurs occupations dans l'île, énonce la nature et la mesure des aliments distribués, enfin, il détaille les maladies qui se sont développées pendant leur séjour, et les moyens employés pour en arrêter leur progression ou parvenir à leur guérison.
